Diverse acts share Buskirk stage

The African American Arts Institute held its 10th annual "Potpourri of Arts in the African American Tradition" at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater Friday. The IU and Bloomington community poured into the theater an hour before the show began, eager to see and hear the sights and sounds for which the AAAI has gained national prominence.

"Through Foreign Eyes: An American Photographer in 1980s and 1990s Poland" opens today at Ballantine Hall, Room 109. The reception for photographer Dennis Chamberlin will begin at 7:30 p.m. Chamberlin first visited Poland during Martial Law and began work on a documentary photo project that turned out to be more involving than he first thought.

Shaolin Warriors to perform tonight

Twenty-three deadly monks are headed for IU. The Shaolin Warriors, a troupe of authentic Shaolin martial arts masters, will display their unique style of kung fu at the IU Auditorium at 8 p.m. tonight. Doug Booher, the IU Auditorium director, said the show would be one of the highlights of the auditorium season. "The audience should arrive expecting a rare glimpse into the rich culture of the world's most skilled and deadly martial artists as they rely on years of training and deep meditation to carry out ancient rituals," Booher said.

Grabbing a 'Cookie' at the BPP

Swing dance soiree teaches lindy hop

The number one rule of swing dancing, and for some the most difficult, is following your partner. The Bloomington Swing Dance Committee provided an opportunity Saturday night for students to learn all about a form of swing dancing called the lindy hop as part of a series of dance workshops. The classes take place the first Saturday of every month at the John Waldron Arts Center, 122 S. Walnut Street.

Sorority craft show raises scholarship money

The Christmas season began a little early at Binford Elementary School, 315 North Drive, Saturday morning. Cheerful gingerbread-man signs led the way as the scent of pies, cookies and spices filled the air. People cheerfully shopped for seasonal decorations and the gifts from local crafters at the eighth annual Tri-Kappa Annual Arts and Crafts show.

Organ performance makes Halloween 'Spooktacular'

I was having a phone conversation with a friend the other day. We were bouncing ideas off each other, and he came up with a theory I did not agree with. He said "Scarface" and "The Godfather" have influenced fashion. "Look around," he said. "Everyone wants to be a thug and wear their suits like the ones in the 'Scarface' and 'The Godfather.'"
