Bloomington Variety Show a success at Waldron

Belly dancers, magicians, jugglers and musicians gathered Saturday at the John Waldron Arts Center for the two-hour Bloomington Variety Show sponsored by the Bloomington Area Arts Council and the Bloomington Musicians and Songwriters Association.

Mathers’ event celebrates influential Brazilian music

The Mathers Museum of World Cultures will present “Sounds of Brazil” at 7 p.m. Friday to highlight influential Brazilian music. Special guest Valeria DeCastro, a Brazilian vocalist, guitarist and composer, will perform songs from various Brazilian composers along with her own.

Variety show to feature local acts

The Bloomington Musicians and Songwriters Association will present a fast-paced variety show featuring performances by musicians, poets, comedians, jugglers, dancers and trapeze artists Saturday at the John Waldron Arts Center.

The violin, guitar and glockenspiel do not seem like very many instruments, but when all played by the same person, along with whistling, singing and frequent use of a looping machine, they can be hard to manage. Chicagoan and multi-instrumentalist Andrew Bird uses these instruments to create sounds comparable to that of a symphony, but with an indie, folk-rock twist

John Vanderslice to play at Waldron

San Francisco-based indie rocker John Vanderslice will play the John Waldron Arts Center at 8 p.m. Oct. 5. Tickets for the show are $5 for IU students and $8 for the general public.

The IU Opera Theater will open its 2007-08 season this Friday with Giuseppe Verdi’s opera “Rigoletto.” Conductor Stephen Lord, recently chosen by Opera News as one of the “25 Most Powerful Names in U.S. Opera,” will lead the Jacobs School of Music Symphony Orchestra, accompanying two alternating casts of some of IU’s top operatic singers.

Andrew Bird to play sold-out show tonight

Andrew Bird will perform to a sold-out crowd at 8 p.m. today in the Buskirk-Chumley Theater. This is the first performance of the year for the BCT Concert Series, and it is jointly hosted by the IU Union Board.
