Exchange uncertainties plague riders' hopes

Lack of experience, poor exchanges and uncertainty as to who will ride come race day played into where the teams in Row 7 will line up for the men's Little 500. But the teams said they refuse to believe starting from the middle of the pack will hurt their chances to speed toward the front of the field. Some even think the less-than-stellar starting position will help.

Red-White game concludes spring practice

Coach Cam Cameron said it isn't often a college football coach gets 15 "excellent" practices out of his team during the spring. He also said his Hoosiers have a shot at making it 15-for-15 Saturday at the Red-White Spring Game. IU began spring practice March 21 and will conclude its spring training Saturday with the spring game, its final NCAA-allotted practice. Cameron said he has been pleased with what he's seen so far.

Eleven rookies. Eleven untested riders. There isn't a lot of Little 500 history for Delta Sigma Pi, Ashton and the Army ROTC. But the women of Row 9 said they are looking forward to making their mark in the 2001 race.

Less than one second separates these three teams in Row 9. But the teams will need to make a surge if they want to reach the front of the pack. The defending champion Cutters found themselves in 25th for the race and look to charge to the front with a new crop of riders.

Like row 11, the teams in row 10 will enter the 2001 Little 500 with little experience. Cold and windy track conditions on qualifications day might have cost each team a chance to move into row 9, but each team said it feels confident it could grab a top-20 finish.

If men's tennis coach Ken Hydinger had to sum up his tennis program, he would do it with one name: Ian Arons. "Ian has been a great guy for four years," Hydinger said of the senior. Hoosiers roll to victory

Before Saturday's scored meet against Ball State, Cincinnati and Central Michigan, coach Randy Heisler said he needed his athletes to finish where they should. Heisler also said some distance runners needed to steal points from the competitors. The coach got what he wanted, as IU gained a 23.5-point victory against closest competitor Ball State.

Hoosiers cruise to victory in 1st scored meet

The men's track team won nine events, set eight career-bests and had its first NCAA provisional mark met of the outdoor season in route to its first scored team victory. IU finished with a 63-point margin of victory against runner-up Cincinnati, which finished with 117 points. Central Michigan remained a contender with 116 points. Iowa finished with 108 points, and Ball State scored 61 points.
