Hoosiers hope to bounce back from bad loss

The Hoosiers hope to snap their two game losing streak and break out of their recent offensive funk when they take on Northwestern at 12:10 p.m. in Evanston, Ill. Both teams are coming off big losses last week. IU (3-5, 1-3) lost an ugly game to Illinois last Saturday on the road. The Hoosiers are winless on the road this season. The IU offense was unable to produce any touchdowns until the final four minutes of the game.

Seniors shine in final game

The women's soccer team recognized its six seniors at Armstrong Stadium last night with the 10th annual Senior Night. After the pre-game festivities, IU went out and battled its in-state rival, the Butler Bulldogs. Butler, from the Horizon Conference, came to Bloomington with a 12-4 record, and looked to spoil Senior Night. A pair of seniors wouldn't allow that. After dominating Butler in most statistical categories for 85 minutes and spoiling numerous chances, IU (10-6-2, 4-4-2 Big Ten) finally scored a goal for a 1-0 win. It was scored by senior forward Jenny Mann, who was assisted by fellow senior forward Kate Kastl. The win improved IU to 4-5-1 all time against the Bulldogs. The goal gave the Hoosiers a win in their final regular season game before the Big Ten tournament, which begins in East Lansing, Mich. next Thursday.

Jeffries makes NBA debut in 74-68 loss

TORONTO -- Morris Peterson scored 20 points and Michael Jordan went scoreless in the second half -- and even missed a dunk -- as the Toronto Raptors opened their season with a 74-68 victory over the Washington Wizards on Wednesday night.

Sophomore takes on leadership role for IU

The men's tennis team is composed mainly of sophomores, with one senior and two freshmen. With lone senior Zach Held's shoulder injury still keeping him from playing until the Big Ten Singles Championships, the team has been looking for new leaders to step up.

LoVecchio loving life as a Hoosier

One might think that it must be pretty frustrating to be Matt LoVecchio. For the first time since third grade, he won't be playing in an organized football game all season. The team that he once quarterbacked, Notre Dame, is undefeated and in the thick of the National Championship hunt.

Experienced coach admired by players

In 23 years of coaching the women's tennis team, the one constant for Lin Loring has been success. During the span, Loring has led IU to 15 Big Ten titles, 19 National Championship appearances and a National Championship in 1982.

Pacers primed for opener

INDIANAPOLIS -- Yao Ming, the Houston Rockets' 7-foot-5 rookie and the No. 1 pick in this year's draft, will make his NBA debut Wednesday night against the Indiana Pacers. "I think Yao is going to be a great player," Thomas said. "He's got all the tools to be one of the great centers in this league." Yao did not join the Rockets until Oct. 20 and played in just two preseason games, averaging 9.5 points and 4.5 rebounds in 18.5 minutes a game. "He's big, he's got a great touch around the basket, he's got good hands, can pass the basketball, has good skill and he understands the game of basketball," Thomas said.

New A's manager named

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Ken Macha was promoted from bench coach to manager of the Oakland Athletics on Tuesday to replace Art Howe. The A's didn't wait long to replace Howe, who officially was hired Monday as manager of the New York Mets. After interviewing for years, the 52-year-old Macha didn't have to leave to finally become a manager.

Doubles duo fall in sweet sixteen

Despite a strong performance from one doubles pair, the men's tennis team returned home early this weekend disappointed after being eliminated from regional action. The team competed in the ITA/Omni Hotels Midwest Regional Championships held in Madison, Wis. Coach Ken Hydinger said he was proud of the team's efforts, but said the squad fell short at important times. The Hoosiers singles teams were eliminated in the first two days of competition. The remaining two players were ousted from the tournament Tuesday as sophomore Jullien Vulliez lost to Michigan State's Cameron Marshall, 6-4, 6-2 and sophomore Tom Bagnato lost to Dipesh Rao of the University of Toledo, 6-7(5), 6-3, 6-4.

Competition lurks for Lakers

With the NBA season now underway, the annual question is again being asked: "Will anyone stop Shaq and the Lakers?" For three years now, the answer, of course, has been no. This year, however, there are some teams that can challenge the league's latest dynasty, and depending on the world's most famous big toe, the end (or at least delay) of an era could be on the horizon. Dethroning the Champion By now, we all know about the Lakers. Here are the teams that could give them trouble.

Noonan rewrites record books

After leading IU to a 1-1 record on their West Coast road trip last weekend and tallying three of the four Hoosier goals and one assist, senior forward Pat Noonan was named the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week for the second consecutive week. This marks the fourth conference Offensive Player of the Week award Noonan has garnered this season and the seventh of his career. Noonan paces the Hoosiers with 34 points on 13 goals and eight assists as IU has a 13-2-2 record heading into this weekend's final regular season match against IUPUI.

Baseball predictions pan out

Think back to what you were doing April 2. You probably had either college basketball or Prom on the mind and pepper spray in your eyes. I, however, made predictions on the baseball season in that day's IDS. Not to be self-serving, but let's see how they turned out. What I said: "Whenever the Phillies feel optimistic about themselves, they usually go in the trash bin." What happened: They didn't finish in last like I thought, but they did drop from 86 to 80 wins.

Another in-state test for IU

Tonight the IU women's soccer team finishes its regular season at Bill Armstrong Stadium against Butler at 7 p.m. The game also marks senior night, the last home game for the seniors who will be competing in their first Big Ten tournament next week. The game figures to be intensely emotional as the seniors have expressed feelings of sadness as well as exhilaration in these final days of the season. "I have mixed feelings, it's been a good season and I'm tired, but then again, I never want it to end because I know this is my last season," senior tri-captain and forward Kristen Sprunger said.

Transfer student continues training after year hiatus

Import brings heart to team

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- Last week in practice, coach Gerry DiNardo and his staff worked on IU's Big Ten-worst red zone offense (scoring 57.7 percent of the times in the red zone this season). This week, the team was perfect inside the Illinois 20-yard line.
