Eye of the rider

In 1988, the women of IU were finally granted permission to have their own Little 500. After a team of girls from Kappa Alpha Theta tried to participate in the men's race, a women's division was formed, and 31 teams instantly joined. In 1988, the women's race had no hype, no superstars, no history. They have had to fight from the shadow of the men's race and establish a reputation of their own.

Derby cast first of Triple Crown races

This year's Kentucky Derby will feature a most unusual cast of characters. And why not? After arguably the wackiest Derby prep season ever, not one 3-year-old has stepped forward to dominate the division. So when entries are taken in a few days for next Saturday's race, a full field of 20 horses is a certainty, many of them uniquely distinctive.

Team seeks more production from bottom of lineup

The season is entering the home stretch, and the IU men's golf team is searching for a way to stand out in a crowded district. Despite placing two golfers in the top 10, IU could only muster a tie for sixth place at last weekend's Kepler Intercollegiate. The Hoosiers realize they will need to put together a stronger performance at this weekend's Firestone Intercollegiate to maintain a strong case for an NCAA Tournament bid.

Hoosiers hit road for Purdue, Illinois

When the No. 59 Hoosiers (11-9, 5-3) hit the road this weekend, they will be trying to keep one streak alive while ending two others. IU will face Purdue tomorrow at noon in West Lafayette and then head to Champaign, Ill., to face the No.1 Illinois Fighting Illini.

Seniors play last matches at home

Climbing the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's team rankings was no easy task for Lin Loring and the IU women's tennis team. But its biggest challenge to date awaits the Hoosiers as they close out the Big Ten regular season against conference leader Illinois and in-state rival Purdue.

Conference title defense begins for IU

The No. 10 Hoosier women's water polo squad will look to defend its Collegiate Water Polo Association Conference title this weekend as the team travels to Lewisburg, Penn., for the single-elimination tournament. IU enters the CWPA tourney as the No. 3 seed and will have a first-round bye. The Cream and Crimson are coming off a heartbreaking loss to No. 8 Michigan this past weekend at the CWPA Western Divisional Championships in a match that they controlled for the most of the game. Despite the loss the Hoosiers played sound water polo, as they were led by juniors Krista Peterson and Jessica Goldner.

Hoosiers to face strong field

The IU women's golf team will participate in the 2004 Big Ten Championships this weekend -- its final tournament of the year before the NCAA Regional Tournament. Ohio State University will serve as host for the tournament, which will be held today through Sunday at the OSU Scarlet Course in Columbus, Ohio. The Hoosiers will play 36 holes today and 18 Saturday and Sunday. This is the first 72-hole tournament of the year for the team.

Clarett thrown for loss at Supreme Court WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Maurice Clarett's bid to enter this weekend's NFL draft was turned down by the Supreme Court Thursday, delaying his attempt to bypass the league's eligibility rule. Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg rejected his first request, saying she saw no reason to overturn a lower court's stay preventing the former Ohio State running back from being taken in the draft.

IU hopes to improve Big Ten record this weekend

Coming off of a big win against Louisville Wednesday, the Hoosiers are looking to improve their record against conference opponents this weekend as they visit Evanston, Ill., to take on Northwestern and East Lansing, Mich., to take on Michigan State.

Hoosiers head to Illinois

The Hoosiers (21-15, 5-7) will travel to Champaign, Ill., this weekend to take on the Fighting Illini. IU will return to conference play coming off a tough 10-5 loss to Miami University. This will be the third of eight four-game series against Big Ten opponents. The Hoosiers split their series with Northwestern, dropped three games to Minnesota and split their series with Iowa.

CHOOSING COLORS

Spring is here. The air is warming, the snow has melted and the flowers are beginning to bloom. Tonight there will also be the familiar sounds of cracks from baseball bats and -- football helmets? The IU spring football season is about to come to fruition in the annual Cream and Crimson game tonight. Optimism is high heading into the game, as both the offensive and defensive units have strengthened since last season. IU's offensive line comes back with a full roster of returning players headlined by junior guard Adam Hines, junior tackle Isaac Sowells and sophomore tackle Justin Frye. The trio had the most action on the Hoosier team as they took 969, 967 and 821 snaps, respectively. Hines brings serious experience to the Hoosier roster and has started in nearly every game of his two-season career -- dating back to the second game of his freshman season.

Clarett case advances to nation's highest court

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Maurice Clarett's status for the NFL draft is now in the hands of the U.S. Supreme Court. Clarett's attorney, Alan Milstein, filed an emergency appeal to the Supreme Court on Tuesday. He asked for a stay of a federal appeals court's decision from 24 hours earlier preventing the former Ohio State tailback from being in this weekend's draft.

Bynum: midseason All-American

Amongst the inconsistency at the plate and some struggles in conference play, senior shortstop Seth Bynum has remained consistent. Consistently good, that is. Now, halfway through the season, he's being recognized by Baseball America for his excellent play.

Grizzlies' Brown wins Coach of the Year

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Hubie Brown answered a question about Memphis' first pro basketball playoff game by detailing how his Kentucky Colonels won the ABA title in 1975. He listed the St. Louis roster and pointing out that 72 of 79 players won NBA jobs after the leagues merged. Jerry West listened, then said: "I can't remember yesterday. How do you remember that?"

IU outlasts 7th inning scare to win win earn big victory

Playing a tough schedule ended up paying off for IU in the end. It looked as if the Hoosiers had the game in hand -- then came the seventh inning. With IU up 2-0, Louisville countered with two runs to tie the score before IU upended the Cardinals in extra innings, 3-2.

Hoosiers suffer non-conference loss

The Hoosiers suffered a loss at home Wednesday to Miami of Ohio (23-11, 6-1 Midwestern Athletic Conference) after surrendering a two-run lead late in the game. IU (21-15, 5-7 Big Ten) gave up seven runs in the top of the ninth after holding the Redhawks scoreless for the previous three innings. IU coach Bob Morgan said the team wasn't able to step up to the plate when it mattered.

Dream a little dream

I've been waiting for this day for a long time. This Saturday is the NFL Draft and all my hopes and dreams will finally be realized. I know a lot people were against me leaving early and entering the draft only after my junior season, but I didn't have much of a choice. Coach DiNardo and I didn't really see eye to eye. He told me he didn't have any room on the roster for a 5-foot-5, 127-pound linebacker. Can you believe it?

O'Brien newest coach of 76ers PHILADELPHIA -- Jim O'Brien wanted to coach the Philadelphia 76ers -- and Allen Iverson. "When you're dealing with somebody like Allen, I really want to be as close to 100 percent sure as I possibly could that I'd be coaching him," O'Brien said. O'Brien got his wish, and the Sixers have their new coach.

Little 500 Grand Marshal Jonathan Vaughters will have more responsibilities than riding in the pace car and talking to fans Saturday. Vaughters, a former top-ranked U.S. cyclist and six-time Tour de France participant, will be choosing one outstanding men's Little 500 rider to receive the inaugural "Most Valuable Rider" award. But the award carries much more prestige than just MVR status -- it will give the recipient a one-year opportunity to join Vaughters and his TIAA-CREF Under-23 team to race and begin building a professional cycling career.
