Reigning Big Ten champs serve notice

After claiming the school's first Big Ten title since 1998, the IU women's tennis team returns to the court this fall to prove last season was no fluke. The Hoosiers followed a 1-9 Big Ten record in 2003 with a 180 degree rotation that left them on top of the Big Ten with a conference record of 9-1, an overall record of 17-8 and a share of the regular season league title last spring.

Experienced team sets sights high

For the IU men's tennis team's upcoming season, settling for second best isn't a part of the plan. With every player returning from last year's team, including standout juniors Jakub Praibis and Ryan Recht and sophomore John Stone, high expectations and a sense of excitement are the dominant sentiments among the players that will either make, or break, the squad's chances.

Robertson's club looking forward to battling conference heavyweights

In field hockey, the Atlantic Coast Conference and the Big Ten are two of the sport's heavyweight conferences. Teams like Wake Forest, Penn State, Duke and Michigan are regulars to the NCAA Final Four. This year, IU hopes to be named among those giants of field hockey.

Deion joins Ravens camp

OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- Deion Sanders is back in the NFL, this time with the Baltimore Ravens. The seven-time Pro Bowl defensive back passed his physical Tuesday and formally ended his retirement by signing a one-year contract laden with incentives. Sanders will practice with the team for the first time Wednesday and expects to play in the Ravens' season opener Sept. 12 against the Cleveland Browns.

Jefferson paces Hoosiers

The past year has seen a transformation of IU's marquee distance runner. After nearly two years of frustration due to injury and other factors, Florida native Sean Jefferson came to national prominence last year with a serious breakthrough. Jefferson seized the NCAA Indoor Championships mile final halfway through with a strong surge and never looked back, coasting across the finish line in celebration, his time right at the magical four-minute barrier.

Forwards have big shoes to fill

Cubs 5, Expos 2 MONTREAL -- Greg Maddux threw seven shutout innings for his 302nd career win and also drove in a run, leading the Chicago Cubs to a 5-2 win over the Montreal Expos Monday night. Maddux (13-8), who became the 22nd pitcher in major league history to reach 300 wins on Aug. 7, scattered five hits, struck out two and walked none.

Serena Williams advances with win

NEW YORK -- Dressed for a night on the town, Serena Williams was all business in her first match in 4 1/2 weeks. Williams strode into Arthur Ashe Stadium wearing knee-high black boots, a pleated denim miniskirt, a studded black tank top and dangling earrings. A far cry from the tennis attire of days gone by, to be sure, but then again, Williams' powerful strokes bear little resemblance to the way the women's game used to be played.

Trio of IU running backs compete for starting nod

The IU football team opens its 2004 season in four days. But as of now, the starting running back job is still up for grabs. Juniors Chris Taylor and Yamar Washington, along with sophomore BenJarvus Green-Ellis are all competing for one job, unlike last year, when the Hoosiers relied on a committee approach to the running game.

AD search winding down

After three months of searching, IU will soon know who will lead its athletics department. IU Alumni Association President Ken Beckley, who is the leader of the search committee, said the search is now focused on one candidate and that an announcement will likely be made early next week.

Caribbean claims Little League World Series championship

SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. -- Carlos Pineda struck out 11 and Jurickson Profar hit a two-run homer as Pabao Little League of Willemstad, Curacao, took an early lead and held on for a 5-2 victory over Conejo Valley of Thousand Oaks, Calif., in the Little League World Series championship Sunday night. California scored both of its runs in the top of the sixth, and had runners on first and third with two outs. James Brady hit to first baseman Christopher Garia, who won a race to make the final out.

IU falls to Cal, beats Stanford

IU women's field hockey team opened up the 2004-05 season this weekend with mixed results. The Hoosiers traveled west to northern California to face off against University of California-Berkeley and Stanford.

Hoosiers kick off season with Milwaukee Cup

The IU women's soccer team started off its 2004 season by claiming ownership of the Milwaukee Cup. The Hoosiers were on their way to defeating Wisconsin-Milwaukee Sunday afternoon after senior forward Kim Grodek scored her first goal of the match in the fifth minute and then scored again in the 32nd minute, receiving a pass from freshman Lindsay McCarthy. IU was able to hold off Wisconsin-Milwaukee after building a two-goal lead with solid goaltending by junior goalkeeper Lauren Fabbro, who recorded four saves.

Colts waiting on physical before announcing deal INDIANAPOLIS -- The Indianapolis Colts are waiting for second-round draft pick Bob Sanders to pass a physical before announcing he has signed a contract. Sanders, the last holdout from this year's draft, reportedly agreed to terms with the Colts Thursday night.

U.S. tops charts for third straight Summer Olympics

ATHENS, Greece -- The United States finished atop the medal charts for the third straight Summer Olympics, with Russia the overall runner-up and China second in gold medals -- its best showing ever and the leading edge of a surge by Asian teams. Six nations won gold medals for the first time; the trailblazers included an Arab sheik marksman and an Israeli windsurfer. Two other countries, Paraguay and Eritrea, won their first medals of any sort.
