Hoosiers kick off season with Milwaukee Cup

Team starts year with two straight wins

The IU women's soccer team started off its 2004 season by claiming ownership of the Milwaukee Cup.\nThe Hoosiers were on their way to defeating Wisconsin-Milwaukee Sunday afternoon after senior forward Kim Grodek scored her first goal of the match in the fifth minute and then scored again in the 32nd minute, receiving a pass from freshman Lindsay McCarthy. IU was able to hold off Wisconsin-Milwaukee after building a two-goal lead with solid goaltending by junior goalkeeper Lauren Fabbro, who recorded four saves. \nIU out-shot UWM 13-9, including a 9-5 advantage on shots on goal. IU also earned more corner kicks than the Panthers by a 6-3 margin.\nThe Hoosiers opened up the tournament Friday night with a 4-0 victory over Marquette, with Grodek recording her first ever hat trick and assisted on another goal. The hat trick was only the fourth ever in the program's 12-year varsity existence, and Grodek tied the program's record for the second-most points in a match.\nMcCarthy scored the other Hoosier goal, while sophomore Megan Pipkens added two assists on the night.\nFabbro posted her first career win and shutout as a Hoosier, as she stopped five Marquette shots on goal.\n"It was a great weekend for this team," coach Mick Lyon said. "We faced two physical teams, and these girls, especially the freshmen and sophomores, really held their own."\nThe last time the women's soccer program won a tournament was at the 2000 Vermont Classic, and the last time the Hoosiers opened the season 2-0 was back in 2000.\n"Defensively, we played well all weekend," Lyon said. "I thought they would attack us in the second period, and they did. We had a few sloppy minutes, but overall, we played two tough teams and gave up just one goal on the weekend."\nGrodek moved into fourth place on the IU all-time goals and points list with 22 and 46, respectively.\nThe Hoosiers won both of their preseason games and have out-socred their opponents 10-2 in the four games.\nIU's next game is Sunday at home against Ball State, which will be broadcast by WIUS radio.
