Confidence is key against Notre Dame

After two 1-0 wins last, the women's soccer team faces rival Notre Dame in South Bend tonight. "Notre Dame is obviously one of the best teams in the country," coach Joe Kelley said. "They are talented and deep. A lot of their players have international experience. "It is a great environment to play in, and I think we are ready. As a program, we have grown, and I think our players have gained confidence in their ability.

Hoosiers shut down Spartans early

Leading up to last night's game, Coach Mike Davis praised Tom Izzo as the best coach in the country, mainly because of the way Izzo can get his No.25 Spartans to be more aggressive than anybody on the boards and defensively. But by the time there were a few minutes left in the game Tuesday night, Izzo could only run his hands through his hair, lean back in his chair and look up to the top of Assembly Hall. Another Michigan State turnover had led to another three-pointer, this one by Dane Fife to give the Hoosiers an 81-58 lead with just 2:33 left.

Six-month drug investigation yields 6 arrests

In an effort between Bloomington police, the Indiana State Police and the Drug Enforcement Administration, six suspects have been arrested during the last few weeks in connection with drug-related charges, inlcuding sales and possession of methamphetamine. The arrests were made in connection with a six-month investigation conducted by the BPD, according to Captain Joe Qualters. The arrests occurred in tandem with about 100 arrests across the nation in a two-year effort dubbed Operation Mountain Express.

Police: Freshman died from injuries at party

The IU freshman who died last month of blunt force trauma to the head struck his head on a metal door casing a few minutes after performing a keg stand at Theta Chi fraternity, police said. When Seth Korona fell backward and struck his head, people around him thought he had passed out from drinking, according to an IU police press release. According to police, Monroe County Prosecutor Carl Salzmann has decided not to file charges in the case, saying there was no "criminal nexus." Salzmann could not be reached for further comment Friday.

IU students perform in Indianapolis

In the big city, four IU students are toiling with the "hardest profession in the world." An adult show, with an adult budget and adult demands are being placed on young performers who are meeting the rising bar, as they rehearse for this week's opening of Indianapolis' Civic Theatre's production of "The Secret Garden."

IU for higher education, not athletics glorification Alumnus Mark Young's letter ("Myles Brand should resign," Feb. 27) is both disrespectful slander and empty rhetoric. IU is an institute of higher education not a forum for athletic deification. Penalizing not a solution

Early last week the Sigma Alpha Epsilon house was put on suspension pending an investigation for a Saturday, Feb. 1 party involving alcohol. Police were alerted to the activities via an anonymous phone call. SAE is the fifth fraternity chapter to face suspension or expulsion at IU in the past 12 months. IU has been attempting to crack down on drinking that leads to injury and death in the past few years, yet alcohol-related incidents resulting in suspensions and probations of fraternity and sorority houses continue to occur. Obviously, the University has not yet hit upon the correct procedure for dealing with this problem.

Survey shows many procrastinators have GPAs of 3.0 or above

Seventy-five percent of procrastinators have a GPA of 3.0 or higher, according to a survey released by Questia Media, Inc., an online company that helps students with research for their papers. The survey, conducted by Decision Analyst Inc., polled 300 full-time college students at two- and four-year colleges who were self-proclaimed procrastinators and who dreaded writing research papers. Almost 8 percent of those polled had a 4.0 GPA.

Iraq says U.N. oil pricing threatens oil-for-food program

Iraq accused the United States and Britain of interfering with the U.N. oil for food program. The program was created in 1996 to ease the suffering of Iraqi civilians under sanctions imposed on Iraq for its 1990 invasion of Kuwait.

Westside bank robbed Friday

A man walked into the People's State Bank Friday afternoon, robbing the bank of $5,500 dollars. Friday's robbery was the second robbery within three days in the Bloomington area. No suspects have yet to be arrested in connection with this robbery.

New production based on post-Sept. 11 events

"Afterdark," a new play by Kara Manning, premieres in Bloomington tomorrow night at the Bloomington Plawrights Project. One of the first plays of its kind, "Afterdark" is set in New York City in December 2001. The play depicts everyday urban dwellers including a radio deejay, a drummer, a coffee shop owner and a teenage girl among others who are dealing with their personal lives three months after the Sept. 11 tragedy.

Universal pass unnecessary

Students were again saddled with a mandatory transportation fee to pay for the so-called universal bus pass. Students taking six credits or more have $27.66 added to their bursar bills to pay for rides on the green Bloomington Transit buses and the red IU Stadium Express, while students with 3-6 credit hours pay $13.83 and those with fewer than three pay $6.92.
