IU claws Wildcats 13-5

The Hoosiers' return home was a successful one, as they downed Indiana Wesleyan 13-5. IU secured a firm grip on the game with a five-run first inning, thanks to some wild pitches and good base running. IU coach Bob Morgan said he was happy with the win but not the team's performance.

Men's soccer senior Drew Shinabarger presented President George W. Bush with a personalized No. 1 'Bush' jersey Tuesday as the Hoosiers were among five fall NCAA champions honored by the president on the south lawn of the White House. Other teams honored included Southern California and Louisiana State's co-national champion football teams, North Carolina's women's soccer team and the USC's women's volleyball team.

Woodlawn Field reopened

As the weather turns warmer, students are venturing outside for fun, fresh air and fitness. But the absence of students on Woodlawn Field, at the corner of 10th and Woodlawn Streets, left many questioning the circumstances around the field's closing and repairs.

'Queen of Soul' hospitalized

NEW YORK-- Aretha Franklin has been hospitalized for an undisclosed ailment and is in stable condition, her publicist said Monday. 'The Queen of Soul,' who lives in Detroit, was hospitalized Saturday, according to Gwendolyn Quinn, her New York City-based publicist. Quinn declined to say where the singer had been hospitalized.

Forum seeks student input

Tuition will likely increase again for next fall, said IU trustees, and members of the board will hold an informational meeting with IU President Adam Herbert and Gov. Joe Kernan today to discuss the tuition-setting process with the public. The meeting will take place from 3 to 5 p.m. at IU-Purdue University Indianapolis, but the public can participate via live stream from any of IU's eight campuses. IU-Bloomington Interim Chancellor Ken Gros Louis will oversee IUB's stream, held in Room 2140 at the School of Education.

Auburn may want Davis

IU coach Mike Davis is on the list of Auburn University's replacements for former head coach Cliff Ellis, who was fired Thursday, The Mobile (Ala.) Register has reported. Davis, a former Mr. Basketball for the state of Alabama, could not be reached for comment on Monday night. If Auburn is interested in Davis, IU athletics director Terry Clapacs said he would be the first at IU to know.

Lecture to enlighten opposite sex

IU Cyclotron Facility scientists John Cameron, Dennis Friesel and Vladimir Derenchuck were walking through the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico last year when they spotted something they would like for their program. That something was a ground-test accelerator, a 40-foot long device used in the Reagan administration's defense program, nicknamed "Star Wars." "It was actually very easy to get," said Cameron, director of the facility.

Wells runs for office

Democrat Scott Wells has decided to make a run at a second 4-year at-large term with the Monroe County Council. The pro-environment councilman was at the forefront of several key changes in Bloomington during his first term, including changing the Monroe County zoning ordinance to help prevent illegal tree-cutting in the Lake Monroe watershed and assisting in implementing reductions in housing density to the ordinances of Lake Monroe & Griffy watersheds, but he said much still needs to be done in the city.

IU a bargain for in-state students I am tired of reading articles that involve students (who coincidentally ALWAYS happen to be Indiana residents) complain about the increase in various fees. IU streaks toward Drake double-dip

Hoosiers look to spring into action

When spring break comes to a close, most students find it hard to return home -- except the Hoosiers. After going 4-2 over spring break, the team is ready to return to the comfortable confines Sembower Field for a game against Indiana Wesleyan. The Wildcats come to Bloomington sporting a 2-9 (0-1 MCC) record. IWU has yet to score more than 10 runs in a game, and its biggest victory came over Brescia University, 9-3.

BPD conducting training at bypass The Bloomington Police Department Critical Incident Response Team is training this week on an IU property at the northwest corner of the State Road 45/46 Bypass and Fee Lane. The training will feature tactics on entering and securing buildings. The training will occur at various times of day and night this week. IU issued a press release urging passersbyers not to be alarmed by the presence of emergency vehicles, as it is all training.

Defending the family

As a nation, we are being forced to address the issue of same-sex marriage. I contend that extending marriage to include same-sex couples would be a foolish departure from the morals that have built our country.
