Lost Valentino film found

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands -- A copy of Rudolph Valentino's silent film "Beyond the Rocks" has been found in the Netherlands. Valentino was an Italian-born movie idol who died in 1926 at the age of 30. He was a star in silent movies during the 1920s. Two of Valentino's most famous films are "The Sheik" and "The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse," both made in 1921.

Indiana may have a harsh winter, but that only makes the warm weather of spring and summer much more exciting. The unseasonably warm weather has had people out and about taking advantage of the sunshine. Because it is so nice, people now look forward to eating outside, and nothing is more popular when eating outdoors than barbeque.

Junior learns life lessons in Bulgaria

Nathan Gilbert is an IU junior majoring in folklore who spent the fall semester in a study abroad program in Bulgaria. With so many study abroad options available, Bulgaria is not a common choice, according to the IU Overseas Study Program, which refers to it as a "non-traditional destination."

Harvard Professor Harvey C. Mansfield has perhaps been the most vocal critic of grade inflation. For years, he tried to keep his grades down and resisted the pressures of students who expected higher grades. But a few years ago, "Harvey C. Minus," finally gave in, somewhat. He now gives each student two grades -- one inflated for the student's school record, and one private grade Mansfield believes better reflects the student's actual performance.

Not my little angel!

If I have to watch one more child make a fool out of his or her parents in a public place, I am going to scream. I will fling myself right down on the ground beside that kid and pitch a fit of my own, which will hopefully freak him or her out enough to quit screeching.

Awarding the Muzzles

They're called the Jefferson Muzzle Awards. You don't want to win one. I'd never heard about them until last week, but the idea is really quite brilliant. Reserved for a handful of the most egregious violators of free speech, each year since 1992, the Thomas Jefferson Center for the Protection of Free Expression has issued the Muzzles as a way to "censure the censors." (Jefferson famously said freedom of speech "cannot be limited without being lost.")

Be Part of a New Radio Show BloomingOUT has recently started a new Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender entertainment show on WFHB Community Radio. No previous radio or communication experience is necessary to sign up for the various volunteer positions offered by the new show. The show is looking for news writers, correspondents, technicians, producers and music directors to join its segment.

Backpacks stolen in Jackson Heights

With almost three weeks of school left, two backpacks were stolen out of unlocked cars in Jackson Heights Thursday night. Junior Cara Cline reported the theft of her backpack Thursday night at about 10:30 p.m. Sophomore Michelle Spurlin was at home when Cline called and told her to check her car.

Kerry says Bush has been 'ineffective' in foreign policy

MIAMI -- Democrat John Kerry accused President Bush Sunday of being "stunningly ineffective" at foreign policy and stuck by his argument that the war against terrorism isn't primarily a military struggle. Kerry, in a wide-ranging interview on NBC's "Meet the Press," also stood by his promise to create 10 million jobs and halve the deficit in his first term if elected, though he conceded soaring red ink could squeeze some proposals.

Bremer: Iraq will not be ready for security by deadline

BAGHDAD, Iraq -- Iraqi security forces will not be ready to protect the country against insurgents by the June 30 handover of power, the top U.S. administrator said Sunday -- an assessment aimed at defending the continued heavy presence of U.S. troops here even after an Iraqi goverment takes over. The unusually blunt comments from L. Paul Bremer came amid a weekend of new fighting that pushed the death toll for U.S. troops in April to 99, already the record for a single month in Iraq and approaching the number killed during the entire war.

Weightlifters converge on Bloomington

This weekend, IU has the distinction of hosting the Midwest Weightlifting Club's regional competition at the University Gym from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event is one of the many tournaments the regional sports club sponsors. May 8, St. Joseph's will host another competition, similar to the one here in Bloomington, which is a team qualifier for athletes to earn a spot at this year's Summer Olympics in Athens. In all, over 150 weightlifters from 35 clubs and 80 colleges and universities in the U.S. will participate. The Snatch and the Clean and Jerk lifts will be used at the competition over the weekend. The competitors will participate in 15 different weight classes ranging from 48 kilograms (106 pounds) to 105 kilograms (231 pounds).
