Committee passes new district map

In a 30-minute meeting with no public comment, the Monroe County Redistricting Committee recommended Wednesday on a party line vote that a new Republican-made district map for the Common Council replace one approved in 2001 by the then-Democrat-controlled County Commission. Democrat Pat Williams voted against the recommendation with Republicans Steve Hogan and Margaret Cook voting for it. "I just believe (the Republican map) is the one that closest fits the criteria," Cook said.

City coordinating relief plan for Katrina victims

The residents of Bloomington have been doing their part the past two weeks to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina. Residents have been buying Red Cross wristbands and volunteering to help, and now Bloomington Mayor Mark Kruzan has decided the city will do its part by donating $15,000 to various charities and coordinating volunteers throughout the city.

Getting 'Lost' never felt so good

Before its premiere last autumn, ABC's "Lost" drew baseless comparisons to "Survivor," "Cast Away" and every previous deserted-island vehicle since film and television began. Thirty minutes into the pilot, anyone fearing a watered-down "Robinson Crusoe" retread was silenced, and most who experienced "Lost" from its initial episode were hooked until Season One's three-hour finale last May.

Flashback to the 70s

ABC makes plans for shows in Spanish

LOS ANGELES -- ABC viewers will get "Lost" in translation as part of a plan to make all the network's primetime entertainment available in Spanish starting this season. The move is an acknowledgment of the expanding U.S. Hispanic population and its potential as a source of viewers.

New Ween reigns supreme

Brazilian answer to Jack Johnson

I first heard Seu Jorge the way I imagine most Americans were introduced to the Brazilian answer to Jack Johnson: via "The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou." His covers of David Bowie hits were brilliant -- and not just for the face value of hearing Ziggy Stardust acoustic and in Portuguese. The remastered songs shined as mellow and intricate.

America finally gets M83's first album

French duo M83 isn't playing shoegaze, nor are they playing electronica or whatever the new term for bleepy-bloopy knob-twiddling yawn music. They don't have a guitar-created wall of sound (opting instead for keyboards), and unlike My Bloody Valentine, you can sometimes decipher human voices singing the lyrics.

An opera of vengeance

Korean director Chan-wook Park's "Oldboy," the second chapter in his Vengeance Trilogy (part one being "Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance; part three being "Sympathy for Lady Vengeance"), is the kind of film that acts as a calling card to the cinematic world. Honored with the Grand Prix at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival (unfortunately meaning it took second place to Michael Moore's worthless "Fahrenheit 9/11"), "Oldboy" is a film that demands to be seen by all.

'Heaven' and 'The Lubitsch Touch'

If anyone knew how to make a comedy with a lot of class, it was director Ernst Lubitsch. There is something magical, something that resonates in his films that earned the merit of "The Lubitsch Touch." "Heaven Can Wait" is one of those films.

Alexander was nothing if not a populist, and one who knew how to spin straw into gold with the best of them.

County unable to enforce ignition interlocks in OWI violators' vehicles

A state law requires drunken-driving prevention devices to be placed in vehicles of repeat offenders, yet Monroe County offers no such service. The law the Indiana General Assembly passed requiring Ignition Interlock Systems, or Breathalyzers, took effect July 1, 2004. The county, however, still does not have the program available for local judges to hand down with sentencing.

Proposed parking garage on hold

For the campus and the community, it's a matter of balance. Residents of campus-adjacent Elm Heights neighborhood were appeased by IU President Adam Herbert's decision yesterday to delay the IU board of trustees' vote on a four-and-a-half-level parking garage, proposed for the southwest corner of campus.

COAS dean considered for IUB chancellor

University officials confirmed Tuesday that College of Arts and Sciences Dean Kumble Subbaswamy is one of three finalists chosen to replace Ken Gros Louis as the IU-Bloomington chancellor. The field has been narrowed and soon the other finalists vying for the chancellor's seat will enter the next phase of interviews. Members of the chancellor search committee said three candidates have been handed up to the president, who will complete the process.
