IU grants total more than half a billion dollars

Indiana University received more than half a billion dollars in research grants and awards during the 2007-2008 fiscal year, breaking previous records for the school and marking a 21 percent jump over last year.

Olympic Mettle

In the meandering, turbulent road to the Beijing Olympics, which start Friday, thousands of protesters and activists have objected to China’s human rights – or lack thereof.

IU golfer Jorge Campillo tees off over rocks and water at Ailsa Golf Course June 15 during the 2008 British Amateur Championships in Turnberry, Scotland. Campillo followed this performance by capturing the Spanish National Amateur Championship last week with a 9-under-par 279 and is currently ranked the second-best amateur player in the world.

Ever since his eighth birthday, IU senior Jorge Campillo has been battling against his countrymen of Spain on the golf course.At the Spanish National Amateur Championship last week, Campillo got the better of all of them, winning in dominant fashion by five strokes.

IUPD cadets feel the burn of pepper spray

Sen. Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign has paid off its $55,000 debt to IU for events it held on the Bloomington campus, according to Associated Press reports.

Hawthorne Heights merits respect

This week, Dayton, Ohio’s Hawthorne Heights will release a new album. Chances are the album, “Fragile Future,” will be mediocre pop/rock at best that won’t raise much fuss except for the Hot Topic set, and even those fans might be long gone. The band has fallen hard and fast since late 2005 and early 2006, when they were at the forefront of the scene.

Longing for the long run

Cross-country running in high school proved to be a most rewarding experience. My first season got me acquainted with the burly captain of the wrestling team who took running as seriously as he did studying. One of those self-proclaimed “seniors-who-just-don’t-care,” he taught me an invaluable lesson of high school (and formal education)’s true value and purpose.

It's no Park Place

In that time, I have had the pleasure of seeing the downtown area transform into an industrious and somewhat peaceful part of town. The hustle and bustle give you a city feeling but with a small-town charm. It was not always that way.

Used to it

It really is amazing what we can just “get used to.” Practices that feel downright ridiculous to us at first quickly become just another part of our daily routine. I bought an iron that straightens my wet hair as it dries it. At first this kind of felt like a bad idea; every time I used it my bathroom would fill with steam and the smell of burnt popcorn. But after a while I stopped worrying about it, and as I explained to my concerned roommate, I’ve actually come to like the sizzling sound it makes as it slides through my hair.

A bitter anniversary

21 doesn't add up

With the near two hour running time and vast talents of Kevin Spacey and Laurence Fishburne, I was expecting great things. I suppose like many before me I was distracted by the Las Vegas glitz and glamour because this movie about counting cards does not add up to a hit.
