The Indiana Daily Student recently ran an article that detailed the upcoming changes to the Campus Bus Service for the 2008-09 school year. Apparently, last school year saw the highest volume of riders on the campus bus services in more than 40 years. The grand total came in at more than 3 million riders.

As anyone who’s a frequent reader of this column knows, I’m one of the more ardent defenders of free speech on this staff, and possibly in the world. Basically, aside from falsely shouting “fire” in a crowded theater and causing a panic, I think people should be allowed to make basically whatever statements they choose to make, so long as they’re in the proper forums.

This week, The New York Times revealed that the Meredith Corporation, which owns 12 local television stations across the country, has incorporated product placement into its news programs – specifically, placing cups of McDonald’s iced coffee in front of their anchors during their morning news broadcasts. And all I can say is: It’s about time!

Rickerby named IU’s assistant director for compliance

Ian Rickerby has been named IU’s new assistant athletics director for compliance. The announcement comes two days after the IU Athletic Department announced former Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance Chad Hawley would return to his position with the Big Ten Conference.

Anthony Thompson enshrined in Hall of Fame

The College Football Hall of Fame enshrined IU’s all-time leading rusher Anthony Thompson  on Saturday night at a ceremony in South Bend. Thompson was among 16 players and four coaches receiving the honor.

Recently hired Associate Athletic Director for Compliance Services Chad Hawley has decided to not take the job at IU within the last 10 days, according to IU Athletics spokesman J.D. Campbell.Hawley will return to his previous position as the Big Ten’s assistant commissioner for compliance

Hoosier alumnus ties for 70th in British Open

Hoosier alumnus Jeff Overton completed play in the 137th Open Championship on Sunday in Southport, England. Overton finished with a nine-over par final round and ended the tournament in a tie for 70th place at 21-over par.
