3rd annual Dia de los Muertos altarpiece celebrates lives of the dead

Instead of celebrating Halloween by watching scary movies and eating obscene amounts of candy, Jaime Sweany, owner of Wandering Turtle Art Gallery & Gifts, has created an altarpiece to celebrate the traditional Mexican holiday, Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), which celebrates the spirits of the dead rather than fears.

Artwork is displayed Sunday afternoon at The Venue Fine Arts and Gifts.

IU alumnus opens new gallery in Bloomington

After graduating from IU with a degree in studio art in 2005, curator Gabe Colman has returned to his former stomping grounds to open The Venue, a gallery featuring fine collections of local, national and international works by award-winning artists. Colman said it has turned into his dream job.

One of IU’s most famous alumni now has a permanent home on campus.

The Grand Foyer of the IU Auditorium was bursting at the seams Thursday evening for the dedication ceremony of the Hoagy Carmichael Landmark Sculpture.

$75,229 in arts grants to be awarded

The Bloomington Area Arts Council and regional partner Indiana Arts Commission have announced the recipients of the 2009 Regional Arts Partnership Grants. After being divided among 33 arts and nonprofit organizations, the grand total of the grants comes to $75,229.

Gallery North’s ‘Storytellers’ here through September

The walls of Gallery North were adorned with 3-D pieces of art Friday evening. In front of them, the guests stood speechless, many with dropped jaws. Behind them was the artist, with a grin on her face as she watched everyone attempt to search for a way to somehow describe her work. Catherine Burris struggles to find the words herself.
