Hoosiers shock Badgers 63-32

·

MADISON, Wis. -- So this is what good defense looks like. This here, just past midfield, senior Sharrod Wallace running step-for-step with Wisconsin's Lee Evans and breaking up Brooks Bollinger's bomb on the first play of the game, is how pass coverage is supposed to go.

Hard Corps

·

"Some people spend an entire lifetime wondering if they made a difference. The Marines don't have that problem." -- Ronald Reagan Marines don't have a problem showing they have a sense of humor, either. Ten IU recruits and officers gathered for their semester dinner at Tortilla Flat to relax and swap stories.

Recovered videotapes show 'martyrdom messages'

·

WASHINGTON -- The government released photos and video excerpts Thursday of five suspected al Qaeda members delivering what Attorney General John Ashcroft described as "martyrdom messages from suicide terrorists." Ashcroft called upon people worldwide to help "identify, locate and incapacitate terrorists who are suspected of planning additional attacks against innocent civilians." "These men could be anywhere in the world," he said.

Knight editorial classy

·

It's nice to see that class still exists in the press. After reading countless retellings of incidents older than most college freshmen, it's nice to see comments on what Coach Knight did for IU on and off the court ("Good Luck, Coach Knight," March 21).

The joys of summer camp

·

Around this time last year I got a phone call asking me if I wanted a job. "Of course," I replied, not even paying attention to who it was on the phone. As it turns out, it was a summer camp at which I had applied to be a mountain bike instructor. I was fairly excited until I realized one thing: there would be children there and I might have to be responsible for them.

New loan system mirrors old

·

Although the University has announced plans to switch financial aid systems, University officials said the new system should mirror the direct lending program in many ways. Students receiving loans will not have to worry about loopholes or red tape most often associated with administrative switches. The 8.25 percent federal cap on interest rates for student loans will still apply when the switchover is complete in the fall of 2004.

Speaking with silence

·

Gathered at Showalter Fountain, members of the GLBT community and their allies greeted each other with hugs and smiles. But no one spoke. They stood expectantly, waiting to begin their march. Soon, it was time -- time to break the day's silence. Carrying signs and murals, they marched to the Sample Gates, slowing only to navigate the turns on the way. Onlookers stopped to watch, looking up from their conversations, books or classes as the procession went by. At the Sample Gates, the group stood in a circle and waited, silently counting down for the clock tower bell to strike 5 p.m.

NEW YORK -- The Dow Jones industrials stormed up almost 490 points, the second-biggest one-day gain ever, and climbed back over 8,000 Wednesday as Wall Street cheered legal and legislative action on the corporate ethics scandals that fueled nine weeks of sharp losses.

Environmentalists' protests not finished

·

One year after the Brown's Woods tree-sit came to an abrupt end, environmental activists in Monroe County have begun their efforts again. Michael Englert, the last tree sitter to come down, filed a lawsuit against Monroe County and several of its sheriffs on July 7. "I had been meaning to file it for a while," Englert said. "One year later seemed like the perfect time."

Chechen rebels ask Secretary Powell to intervene

·

VLADIKAVKAZ, Russia -- Rebel leaders in breakaway Chechnya on Saturday asked U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell to try to get Russia to end military operations in the village of Mesker-Yurt. The rebels' foreign ministry said in a statement that Russian forces had sealed off Mesker-Yurt for several days to look for rebels and their sympathizers, detaining hundreds of residents and taking them to undisclosed locations in Chechnya.

'IDS' right to print Horowitz ad

·

I would like to express my support for the IDS' decision of printing the "Ten Reasons Why Reparations for Slavery is a Bad Idea -- and Racist Too." It is a real showing of respect for our Constitutional First Amendment and even though the public might hold differing views on the issue, it is morally correct to permit these views to be expressed publicly through our media. The fact that they were presented to the public is a statement of support for civil rights.
