Team clinches berth in Big Ten tourney with draw

The IU women's soccer team wrapped up another tough weekend of Big Ten play Sunday after the Hoosiers suffered a 1-0 loss to Northwestern and drew with Illinois 1-1. IU lost its second consecutive conference game Friday afternoon when Northwestern scored in overtime to give the Wildcats a golden goal victory. Northwestern's Ashleigh Garmon scored off of a corner kick that sailed right into the IU penalty box with just three minutes left to play in the first overtime period.

Patriots hang on to beat Seahawks

FOXBORO, Mass. -- The New England Patriots got another victory -- but quite a scare -- as they extended their NFL record for consecutive wins. They stopped a late Seattle comeback to beat the Seahawks 30-20 Sunday, running their streak to 20 wins, including playoffs. They also tied the league record with their 17th consecutive regular-season victory.

Astros even series with new Killer B's

HOUSTON -- Julian Tavarez must have forgotten about Carlos Beltran when he said the Cardinals didn't think the Houston Astros were so special. Beltran struck again Sunday, homering in a record fifth straight postseason game and lifting the Astros over St. Louis 6-5 to even the NL championship series at 2.

IU's 5th place finish all but secures Nationals

Offseason gets Hoosiers in shape

Friday night's Midnight Madness festivities ended IU's nine-week preseason individual workouts. IU coach Mike Davis credited the program and summer workouts for noticeable improvements in the Hoosiers' physique coming into the 2004-05 season during Media Day, which preceded the event.

Els wins record sixth Match play title on birthday

VIRGINIA WATER, England -- On his 35th birthday, Ernie Els received a familiar present -- a World Match Play title. And he just might have his 96-year-old grandfather to thank. Els won the tournament for a record sixth time, beating Lee Westwood 2 and 1 Sunday to capture golf's biggest payday -- $1.8 million.

IU's 50-game Big Ten unbeaten streak snapped by

The Hoosiers made history Friday night at Bill Armstrong Stadium by reaching 50 straight Big Ten conference regular season games without a loss. But by Sunday afternoon the streak was just that -- history. IU fell to Northwestern (8-3-2, 1-1-1) 1-0, breaking a 50-game Big Ten unbeaten streak, 30-game home unbeaten streak and a 20-0 all-time record against the Wildcats.

First 'SlowFest' block party promotes locally prepared food

Slow Food Bloomington hosted SlowFest, an outdoor block party, to celebrate the local fall harvest yesterday, with several local restaurants serving foods with local flavor — literally. All the ingredients in foods present were grown by local farmers, and were the tastes of community traditions, organizers said.

IU professor defies logic at WonderLab

The Monroe County Community School Corporation superintendent helped participate in the highlight event at WonderLab's "Science Night Out." During the experiment, IU physics professor Rick Van Kooten threw an apple at the bed of nails to demonstrate they were real.

College women face self-esteem issues

IU sorority women have reason to smile by simply looking at their reflection in the mirror. Los Angeles resident Juliet Funt, a motivational speaker for eight years, lectured sorority women on the issues of body image and self-esteem in a presentation titled "Buff Up Your Insides" Thursday evening at Assembly Hall. Funt's speech framed the self-esteem of women, or the lack thereof, as an urgent issue with lifetime consequences society must recognize.

Measuring up to Clinton

If you could have a couple drinks with any living American politician, who would it be? Without hesitation, I would pick Bill Clinton. I came to this conclusion after a waking dream about John Kerry. He was on a golf cart, giving his speech about the various socio-economic gaps currently afflicting American society. When he suddenly remarked about the state of things as "bullshit," I woke up, instantly realizing it was a dream because I know John Kerry does not possess the ability to be so candid, nor so emphatic.
