The defeat of elitism

The people have spoken. In spite of poll numbers that favored Sen. John Kerry, the election results of Tuesday dealt a devastating blow to the increasingly liberal and elitist Democratic Party and the American "left" by re-electing George W. Bush and expanding the Republican majorities in Congress.

The squirrel whisperer

I'll admit it. Since the close results of last Tuesday's presidential election, I've had only one thing on my mind. It eats away at me like a deadly bacteria, and I can't let it go. There's a question that I can't stop asking myself. Some say I should just move on, but I just have to bring it up. The thing is, there are a lot of fat squirrels on campus. With all that extra weight slowing them down, could I potentially catch one?

Electoral college limits votes In response to one of Wednesday's articles by the IDS Editorial Board ("Keep it going" Nov. 3), I must say that you are absolutely wrong. You're missing a key point that most people look over when debating this issue: more people would vote if we abolish the Electoral College. Think about it.

Praying for daylight

And just like clockwork, daylight savings time is back on the Hoosier agenda. Gov.- elect Mitch Daniels is proposing a plan to put Indiana residents in a uniform time zone. Whether that uniform time zone is eastern or western, he's yet to determine.

Local talent showcases jazz opera

What results when grand opera, jazz and musical theater meet? Something very odd and unique, no doubt. Over the course of the next two weekends at the John Waldron Arts Center, the Bloomington community will have a chance to fully experience this weird hybrid. "The Threepenny Opera," written in 1928 by the German-Jewish composer Kurt Weill with libretto by Berthold Brecht, is a full-blown jazz opera performed by the Detour Theatre Company under direction of Terence Hartnett.

IU School of Music alumna becomes a star in New York

The world has discovered the IU School of Music's latest superstar. IU Alumna and Indianapolis native Angela M. Brown recently received rave reviews from The New York Times for her debut performance as the lead in New York City's Metropolitan Opera's production of Verdi's "Aida" Friday.

Like father, like son. For many young boys, there is the inherent dream to be like their fathers, if only for a short while. The picture is common and crystal clear: A young boy suits up in his father's attire and pictures himself following in his footsteps. Sophomore lineman Justin Frye and senior long snapper Kyle Warriner's childhood aspirations took a similar path; however, their fathers' footsteps were formed by pairs of football cleats.

Not all IU Buckeyes embrace Ohio vote

Sophomore Hillary Knapp helped register more than 40 people to take part in this year's election while working as a volunteer for Rock the Vote! There was just one person she overlooked: Herself. "I ended up being pretty hypocritical," Knapp said. "I voted in my residence hall last year and the year before that at home and I didn't realize you had to register back in the original spot. By the time I found out, it was too late to register in either place. I was in limbo."

Morale committee keeps spirits high for 36-hour event

Students clad in sweatpants, T-shirts and gym shoes shuffle into the brightly lit basement of Kappa Delta sorority, laughing and making wisecracks. The mood is light and the students greet each other with warm smiles and hugs. They are here to learn a line dance.

Indiana Invitational ends fall season

The IU women's tennis team will close the fall season this weekend at the IU Tennis Center by playing host to the Indiana Invitational. Three other schools come into town this weekend including in-state rivals Notre Dame and Purdue along with DePaul University for the three-day tournament.

IU poised to take on Michigan State

The IU women's field hockey team is set to take on Michigan State at this weekend's Big Ten tournament. IU has yet to win a conference tournament game, but the Hoosiers are coming off their best season since the program restarted in 2000. The team's 12 wins are the most in school history. "The fact that we've played Michigan State recently gives us an advantage," said IU coach Amy Roberston. "We should be able to make some adjustments and play well."
