Praying for daylight

And just like clockwork, daylight savings time is back on the Hoosier agenda. Gov.- elect Mitch Daniels is proposing a plan to put Indiana residents in a uniform time zone. Whether that uniform time zone is eastern or western, he's yet to determine. \nCurrently 77 of 92 counties do not observe daylight savings time. However, counties like Lake, Spencer, Posey and Gibson do. They turn their clocks ahead an hour in the spring and then fall back into standard time in October.\nDaniels said establishing a uniform time will be good for business. He also said daylight savings time statewide can cut confusion and defray energy costs.\nBut we're confused. Is this the same kind of talk we've heard time and again or will this be the real deal? \nThe Hoosiers in the 77 counties that do not change time will require much convincing by Daniels. Many think it would be a nuisance changing their clocks and sleep schedules. Farmers may be especially annoyed since their schedules revolve around sunrise. And students won't support anything that makes their lives a little more difficult unless there is good enough reason. \nDaniels better be prepared for opposition.\nIn order for his daylight savings time plan to work, he will have to do a lot more campaigning to be able to persuade the majority. Daniels must be more specific as to the benefits the change will have for the average citizen. If business is his main concern then he may lose this battle, and the issue will disappear again only to return on the agenda of the next governor.
