New dessert cafe opens downtown

Local dessert lovers have a new place to satisfy their cravings with the opening of a dessert café and cake shop downtown. Pastry chef and chocolatier David Fletcher opened BLU Boy Chocolate Café and Cakery on Aug. 8 at 112 E. Kirkwood Ave., in a space next to the Buskirk Chumley Theater.

For thousands of freshmen, the annual CultureFest is nothing short of a revelation. With a host of entertainers, the event seeks to highlight the myriad cultural experiences available on campus. Understandably, many students from smaller towns are likely to be overwhelmed by the perennial buzz word at IU: diversity.

Just in case you’ve been in a coma for the past year, you’ve been on Saturn or you’re a freshman, here’s some news for you: This year marks the first in the tenure of IU President Michael McRobbie. McRobbie replaced Adam Herbert, who got the boot because various people were unhappy with his job performance. Yeah, you heard me right. A president was removed because people thought he was doing a bad job. Fancy that.

In case you care, Attorney General Alberto Gonzales resigned. It’s hard to believe that Democrats and Republicans could agree on anything other than their personal pay raises, especially with elections right around the corner. Nevertheless, donkeys and elephants in Congress have, in recent weeks, become increasingly united on the topic with which they seem most enthralled: disparaging Mexicans (or at least Gonzales).

Every year Beloit College puts out a “Mindset List” meant to identify how incoming college freshmen view the world. This is as an opportunity for old folks to nostalgically scoff at no-good whippersnappers. But are we really missing out on that much? Here are some samples from this year’s list: “1. What Berlin wall?” The Berlin Wall has been nonexistent during a freshman’s lifetime.

The term “free agent” is one that marks an athlete who can choose to play for the bidder of their choice and is generally used in association with professional athletics in the United States and throughout the world. Like so many other entities in a market-based economy, a free agent market’s primary aspect is money. But without money – that is, actual currency – can a free agent market still exist? And, if so, has the association employing that unnatural economy traversed from the realm of amateur and become professional?

The Big Ten Network strikes deal in 2 markets

The Big Ten Network reached a deal Wednesday with Insight Communications to carry the channel on its Classic service in two markets. Insight will carry the network in Evansville, Ind., and Columbus, Ohio, and that service will stretch into parts of northern Kentucky, according to a press release. The network will also be launched on Insight’s Digital 2.0 service throughout Kentucky and will be aired during a two-week promotional period on Insight’s Classic service.

Campus cable to provide The Big Ten Network for residents

Students living in dorms have an extra reason to bleed cream and crimson this year. However, unlike their on-campus counterparts, many of those residing off campus may miss out on a number of IU games available to them on TV. The Big Ten Network, which is set to launch today, will carry a minimum of three IU football games, at least six conference IU men’s basketball games and likely more Hoosier athletic events which will be announced later, according to the Big Ten Network’s Web site. This weekend, BTN will broadcast Saturday’s home football game against Indiana State as well as Sunday’s men’s soccer match between IU and UCLA.

MCPL director resigns, senior health benefit program reinstated

After months of controversy, Monroe County Public Library Director Cindy Gray has resigned, effective Aug. 31. Stephen Moberly, president of the board of trustees, made the announcement at a board meeting and public hearing on the 2008 budget. At the same time, he also announced a plan to reinstate the over-60 benefits program the board had decided to cut in August 2006.

IU prepares for trip to Bahamas

The IU men’s basketball team will kick off the 2007-2008 season this weekend by playing four exhibition games in the Bahamas. While many students would jump at the opportunity to jet to the Bahamas after the first week of classes, coach Kelvin Sampson said for the team, this trip is anything but a vacation.
