Fine arts school opens new exhibits

Special exhibitions offering graduating MFA candidates an opportunity to showcase their works during three consecutive group shows began Wednesday and run through May 11 on the first floor of the Hope School of Fine Arts.

One last show

The Barber Brothers return today to the Jazz Fables stage at Bear's Place. Cover is $5 at the door, and the show begins at 5:30 p.m. The evening will celebrate the 23rd birthday of Roland Barber, who plays trombone, and Rahsaan Barber, who plays saxophone.

Puppets thrill audience

Tiny, smiling faces lined up outside of the Monroe County Library auditorium Saturday. Members of the audience arrived 15 minutes early to get their tickets for the Puck Players' production of "Babar." Playing at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., the show was free to the public and geared toward children ages 2 to 6. Children clutched their parents' hands and walked into the dimly lit auditorium. Nina Ost, master puppeteer and organizer of Puck Players, greeted them. Her voice was warm and friendly and she acknowledged every child as he or she walked through the door.

NEA chair hopes to restore agency's image

WASHINGTON -- The new chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts, Dana Gioia, has big plans for the agency: a national tour of Shakespeare's plays, a national poetry recitation contest, programs for rural and military communities.

LONDON -- A British tabloid said Tuesday it has hired reporter Peter Arnett shortly after he was fired by NBC-TV for saying on Iraqi television that the U.S.-led war effort had failed. "Fired by America for telling the truth," the Daily Mirror said in a Page One headline. BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra has selected Marvin Hamlisch as its principal pops conductor. LONDON -- Two early watercolors by children's author and illustrator Beatrix Potter have been auctioned for a total of more than $64,000.

Mezzo-Soprano to sing at IU

Internationally acclaimed mezzo-soprano Susan Graham will give a solo recital at the IU Auditorium at 8 p.m. Thursday. Graham's IU performance is part of her 2003 North American Recital Tour, which will end with a flourish as Graham makes her Carnegie Hall debut in mid-April.

'Head of State' heads weekend box office

LOS ANGELES -- Audiences gave their votes to Chris Rock and put his presidential farce "Head of State" in the lead with a weekend box office of $14 million. The Steve Martin and Queen Latifah comedy "Bringing Down the House," the top movie for three straight weekends, held the runner-up slot with $12.5 million, according to studio estimates Sunday.

'Urban Cowboy' continues
