Contrary to what the above headline may suggest, this will not be an on-going feature here on the Basketblog. Rather, three of IU's six Class of 2009 commits have been a Maxx Athlete "Commit of Day" (whatever that really means), most recently Bobby Capobianco.

Class of 2006 recruits Greg Oden and Mike Conley went to Ohio State. Five-star junior Dominique Ferguson is Kentucky-bound. And fellow Lawrence North High School junior Justin Martin (No. 36 Scout.com, No. 38 Rivals.com) is expected to choose between Louisville and Xavier this week, according to Jody Demling of the Louisville Courier-Journal.

Three-star junior power forward Brandon Mobley will be in town tonight for the Haunted Hall of Hoops (and likely tomorrow one might assume). Don't be fooled by the the Savannah, Ga. native's three-star rating though, as a 6-foot-9, 200-lb. power forward would appear to be a nice fit in the Tom Crean system.

Five-star recruit Dominic Cheek is "no longer interested" in IU and Seton Hall, according to St. Anthony High School (N.J.) associate head coach Ben Gamble. Here's a brief timeline of the Cheek recruitment:

August 20: tells HoosierNation.com he plans to visit IU

Fred Glass is your new IU Director of Athletics. Old news (though check out the previous post with all the IDS coverage). What you may not know is that a four-star Class of 2010 recruit is expected to take an unofficial visit to IU next month.

IU isn't expected to win too many games this year, but get ready for some exciting calls like that (hypothetical one) in the above headline. If you are looking for some excitement this year when watching IU games, look no further than the Big Ten Network.

Arizona is already feeling the effect of losing legendary coach Lute Olson to retirement. The Wildcats had a Top 10 recruiting class for 2009, with a five-star recruit and two-four star prospects in the fold for next year. While five-star Abdul Gaddy is still committed (though not a guarantee to stay), four-star recruits Solomon Hill and Mike Moser (a former IU target) have already declared that they are not still committed to play for the Wildcats.

Tom Crean has received six verbal commitments from Class of 2009 prospects. At Friday night's Hoosier Hysteria festivities, Bobby Capobianco was there. Jordan Hulls was there. Derek Elston was there. Christian Watford. Maurice Creek was there (or so I've heard). Bawa Muniru was not.

The Anderson University (Ind.) Ravens will help kick off the Tom Crean era on Nov. 7, as the Hoosiers will play their first of two exhibition games that night at 7 p.m. That same day/night, five-star recruit Dominic Cheek will be on campus for a visit, according to both Adam Zagoria (ZagsBlog.net) and Shay Wildeboor (JayhawkSlant.com).

"Midnight Madness" events are a bit old school these days, but regardless of what time a major college basketball program tips off its first "practice," it is always a big draw for top recruits and potential targets. Take last year, for example, as Derrick Rose opted to attend Memphis' event instead of Hoosier Hysteria. He then committed to Memphis. Last weekend, Kentucky picked up a verbal from five-star recruit Daniel Orton following Big Blue Madness.

CBSSports.com national columnist Gregg Doyel has weighed in on the Hoosiers in his latest column. He is essentially pleading to the NCAA to let Crean and his newly inherited basketball program go free of further damage.

Inside the Hall has a nice update on 2010 recruit Aaron Cosby. Cosby, who will be on campus this weekend as well as the following for Hoosier Hysteria, said IU and Minnesota are his top two schools right now. IU coach Tom Crean and assistant Tim Buckley are expected to be in Louisville today, watching the three-star recruit in an open gym.

A few weeks back, the big debate among IU fans was whether they would prefer a big man, or the possible services of five-star recruit Dominic Cheek. Bawa Muniru committed, thus giving IU a big man, but Cheek isn't out of the picture either.
(10/06/08 7:24pm)
Chris Braswell, a four-star power forward and friend/teammate of IU bound Maurice Creek, is off the board. Braswell visited IU two weekends ago, and despite a good visit, indications were that IU would have to beat out Charlotte for Braswell's services.

CollegeHoops.net, a site I know nothing about, isn't putting too much weight on IU's rebuilding process or Purdue's resurgence last season.

When Christian Watford verbally committed to IU, the Hoosiers' 2009 recruiting class jumped up to No. 5, according to Rivals.com. Thanks to the recent commitment from big man Bawa Muniru, IU is now considered the third best class in the early team rankings. IU fans have to love seeing PG, SG, SF, SF, PF and C, as Crean is really adding a versatile group of players.

Early in September, Class of 2010 recruit Aaron Cosby made an unofficial visit to the IU campus. The 6-foot-3 shooting guard from Louisville enjoyed his visit, and will be back according to Jody Demling.

____simple_html_dom__voku__html_wrapper____>With the recent pledge from 6-foot-11 center Bawa Muniru, IU men’s basketball coach Tom Crean now has six commitments from the 2009 class, although he only has room to give away five available scholarships.Muniru’s commitment last Thursday leaves 14 potential scholarship players in the fold for next year’s IU squad. But NCAA rules limit teams to 13 scholarships with the Big Ten permitting the Hoosiers to over-sign by one. Crean will be forced to make an adjustment should all six sign, but that hasn’t stopped him from recruiting for next year.Despite Muniru’s commitment, four-star recruit Chris Braswell visited this past weekend.Bobby Capobianco, the first of the '09 recruits to commit to IU after Crean’s arrival, was also on campus last Saturday and said he isn’t quite sure how it will all play out.“That’s a whole lot of business that coaches have to deal with,” he said Sunday by phone. “Even with Bawa (committing), we don’t have enough scholarships. I definitely don’t see there being a spot for Braswell.”The IU coaching staff hasn’t turned its shoulder on Braswell, though. The power forward told John Decker of HoosierNation.com that Crean wants him in an IU jersey.Regardless of whether Braswell does commit and even if Muniru doesn’t sign until the spring – as rumors suggest might happen – Crean will have to plan how he wishes to allocate next year’s scholarships. That could mean parting ways with one of his current players or even telling an unsigned recruit there is no longer room for him.Fans on the IU message boards have thrown around Capobianco’s name, on account of the three-star recruit being the only of the six commitments not ranked among the Top 150 recruits, according to Rivals.com.“I’m not worried,” he said. “It doesn’t really upset me. The people who write those things on the message boards, they aren’t inside the program. They’re the people on the outside looking in. Let them speculate, it doesn’t offend me at all.”Capobianco, who is ranked No. 100 by ESPN’s Scouts, Inc. rankings, was highly coveted by Crean long before he took the IU coaching position, and there are no indications that IU is planning to cut him loose. Off the court, Capobianco said he shares the same enthusiasm and passion for IU basketball as his future coach. If he had the choice to enroll at IU now, he said he would jump at the opportunity. “It’s kind of one those things where (after the visit) if coach had asked me to stay and just go into my dorm room after, I would have,” he said. “I’m really excited.”During his unofficial visit, Capobianco, the other recruits and this year’s team watched the first half of the IU football game before heading to Assembly Hall for an open gym.Capobianco and fellow 2009 recruit Jordan Hulls teamed with current Hoosiers Verdell Jones, Nick Williams, Tom Pritchard and Malik Story while five-star sophomore recruit Marquis Teague rotated in a bit as well.Capobianco, a 6-foot-8 forward, said he saw a lot of improvement from the IU players and noticed they are in “a whole lot better shape,” from working with strength and conditioning coach Jeff Watkinson. He was especially complimentary of transfer Jeremiah Rivers.
