Tom Crean has received six verbal commitments from Class of 2009 prospects. At Friday night's Hoosier Hysteria festivities, Bobby Capobianco was there. Jordan Hulls was there. Derek Elston was there. Christian Watford. Maurice Creek was there (or so I've heard). Bawa Muniru was not.
Muniru, the 6-foot-11 big man and most recent commit to the program, was never expected to be there. All week, IU fans expected the other five commits on campus, but weren't expecting Muniru. No big deal, right? Wrong.
Jody Demling says that, according to NewsOk.com, Muniru was at Oklahoma State on Friday. I searched and searched and searched NewsOk and found nothing. Thanks to an insider account on Scout, however, I not only saw Muniru's name mentioned in an article, but I saw a photo of Muniru in the stands at OSU's Homecoming & Hoops event (need Scout account to access).
Sources had siad that Muniru wouldn't been signing with IU anyways until the spring signing period, rather than next month in November, but what does this say now about his commitment to the Hoosiers? It is not uncommon these days for recruits to change their minds, but it was just a few weeks ago that he verballed and called IU the "best fit" for him.
One could argue that Muniru not signing with IU could ease the scholarship situation issue, but then the Hoosiers would still be without a legit big man in the Class of 2009. As always, we'll just have to wait and see how this all plays out.
