Thirty people huddle outside the door to Shalom Community Center at 7:58 a.m. on a chilly Thursday morning. The wind carries clouds of cigarette smoke off the porch. Some hold dog leashes, and some carry backpacks or strollers piled high with blankets and coats. Some bring nothing at all.

Cheers echoed through the audience at the annual “Windfall Cabaret” showcase Sunday at the Switchyard Park Pavilion. Hosted by Windfall Dance Company, the evening brought together a diverse lineup of performers, including Dark Side Troupe, One2One Team K-Pop, Bette Lucas Belly Dance and Flamenco, UNi.SON, InMotion and Ballet Folklórico de IU, all sharing the stage to celebrate movement in its many forms.

For six months, downtown businesses along Kirkwood Avenue have operated without the sound of engines or the rush of traffic, turning the street into a space for pedestrians and outdoor dining. While some blocks still remain filled with patios and summer activity, others are beginning to reopen as the city restores vehicle access to the downtown corridor.
