IU-Mississippi Valley State: Defense still reigns

The IU men's basketball team is showing that defense can win games, too. The Hoosiers held the visiting Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils to 34 percent shooting in a 71-54 victory Tuesday, the third consecutive game IU has held the opponent to under 35 percent from the field. Yes, the level of competition matters, but consider this: The Hoosiers completed the same feat just three times all of last season, and five times in coach Tom Crean's tenure. All offseason, Crean preached how the defense needed to become one of the best in the conference because, offensively, they just aren't good enough to run up and down the floor every night.

IU defeats Mississippi Valley State, 71-54

Mired in its worst shooting effort of the young season, the IU men's basketball team turned to less conventional ways of scoring Tuesday. The Hoosiers shot just 38 percent from the field, including just 33 percent in the first half, but used opportunistic defense and unselfish passing to pull away from Mississippi Valley State in a 71-54 victory at Assembly Hall. IU (3-0) collected a season-high 10 steals, scoring 32 points off turnovers and had 16 assists on 23 total field goals to put the visiting Delta Devils (0-2) away in the final game of a daunting stretch of three games in five days. Sophomore forward Christian Watford led all scorers with 18 points and was one rebound shy of back-to-back double-doubles.

Inside IU's box score

Bet you didn't know... That in two games, IU coach Tom Crean has used 45 different 5-man lineups. That of those 45 lineups, 10 of the 5-man lineups have a negative plus/minus score. That of those 10 negative lineups, Derek Elston is in eight of them. And in the 10 most effective lineups (per plus/minus), Elston is in just three. I don't mean to pick on Elston.

IU-Wright State: Hoosiers take what they get

After the Hoosiers put up 27 and 28 3-point shots in their last two contests, respectively, it was hard to imagine them being outshot from beyond the arc. That's why they play the game. The IU men's basketball team shot only nine 3-pointers in its 67-44 victory against Wright State, while the Raiders put up 14 attempts.

IU faces hard-nosed challenge in Wright State

IU coach Tom Crean said Friday he wanted to play teams that mirror something they're going to see late in the season: physical, ball-distributing teams. He'll get that when the Hoosiers (1-0) play host to Wright State (0-0) on Sunday at Assembly Hall. "They are a very physical, contact-oriented team, and we've got to play through that," Crean said.

IU-Wisconsin: What we learned

We certainly didn't learn much of anything positive about the Hoosiers, who gave up 83 points to a team without arguably its best offensive player (RB John Clay Jr.). The score: 83-20. 1.

Weather Conditions for IU vs. Wisconsin

As I sit here with Geoffrey Miller and Justin Albers in beautiful Camp Randall Stadium, the weather could not be worse for the Hoosiers. The upper 40's temperatures and on and off rain does not play into the Hoosiers pass-only offense.
