Is EWB 'The Guy?'

That's a question that seems to keep popping up after IU's heartbreaking (can I even use that word anymore?) 34-31 loss to Virginia Saturday night at Memorial Stadium. When IU trailed 23-3 early in the second half, I thought it was time to see Dusty Kiel.

LIVE BLOG: Virginia vs. Indiana

Two seasons ago, the Hoosiers travelled to Charlottesville, Va., for a seemingly even matchup between two teams looking for a non-conference statement win. They left with a 47-7 loss, managing barely half as many yards on offense as the Cavaliers, a team that would go on to a 3-9 record and fire their coach following the season. Today brings IU's chance for revenge when the Hoosiers take on Virginia at Memorial Stadium. Virginia at Indiana

Men's soccer tacks on third win, stays undefeated

After jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the first half off of a pair of goals from senior Alec Purdie, the IU men's soccer team fended off a late run by the Bucknell offense to win its third game of the season 3-2 Friday night in South Bend at the Mike Berticelli Memorial Tournament. Purdie scored his two goals over a span of just over three minutes midway through the first half, and they proved to be the lone difference between the two teams after the first half, with each team with eight shot attempts. Bucknell came out firing in the second half, though, and after an own-goal off an IU player in the 61st minute and another goal in the 69th, IU's clean record seemed to be in jeopardy. But, with just 13 minutes left to play in regulation, freshman Eriq Zavaleta saw the ball roll his way and drilled it into the back of the net for his third goal of the season, and most importantly, breaking the game's tie. The Hoosiers will finish off their action in South Bend Sunday morning against Denver and former head coach Mike Freitag at 11:30 a.m.

Zavaleta earns the Hoosiers another accolade

The men's soccer team began the season with pre-season accolades and they have continued that trend in the first two weeks of the season. Prior to the season IU seniors Chris Estridge, Tommy Meyer and Alec Purdie were named to the Big Ten Players to Watch List along with the team being picked to win the conference for the eighth time in nine years by the Big Ten coaches. The trend continued when goalie Luis Soffner was named the conference's Defensive Player of the Week following his double overtime shut out of Notre Dame in the season opener in South Bend. The offense was nonexistent in the opener at Notre Dame, but games two and three brought a nine goal offensive explosion led by freshman Eriq Zavaleta, who had two goals and two assists over the weekend against Saint Louis and Dayton.
