Field hockey goes to Iowa for two games

IU field hockey goes to Iowa City to play the Iowa Hawkeyes for their second Big Ten game on Friday and the Cal Golden Bears on Saturday. Currently, the Hoosiers are 5-4 with 0-1 in the Big Ten Conference. Last year, the Hawkeyes beat the Hoosiers twice, once at home in the season, 1-6 and once in the Big Ten Championships, 2-5. The Hawkeyes are 3-5, with their first Big Ten win of the season against Michigan last Friday. The last meeting between the two teams was two years ago, when Indiana won 2-0 in Berkley, CA. Cal is also 3-5 on the season, but they won their first Northern Pacific Conference win at home against Stanford last Sunday. Last year, Cal went 13-5 on the season with a 5-1-conference record.

Coach Lynch press conference notes and quotes

Here are some notes and quotes from the Tuesday afternoon press conference. Lynch, as usual, took questions for about 30 minutes. For the first time I can remember this season, Lynch did not talk about the previous game in his opening comments as he focused solely on Ohio State, although he took several questions about the Michigan game. Michigan interception Lynch took several questions on the controversial interception in the Michigan game at the end of the press conference, although he didn't really talk much about it. Asked if he hit anyone on the sideline with his gum: "I haven't been called by any lawyer or anything at this point," Lynch said jokingly. After seeing it on film, did Lynch have any different thoughts?

Lynch: 'There weren't any bullets left'

The Hoosiers nearly upset Michigan in Ann Arbor for the first time since 1967, but it may have come at a price. On his Monday night radio show, IU coach Bill Lynch talked about how he pulled out all the stops in their upset bid last week. I thought the offensive staff and defensive staff put together great plans.

Time running out for purchasing student section seats for Ohio State game

If students plan to attend the Oct. 3 game against Ohio State and participate in the dedication of the North End Zone, they have to act fast. Less than 1,000 student tickets remain and just over 5,000 reserved seats are available for Saturday's contest, slated to kick off at 7 p.m. "We are encouraging everybody to get their tickets in advance," said J.D.

OSU's Coleman suspended

Following a line of suspensions for flagrant personal fouls, the Big Ten conference suspended Ohio State safety Kurt Coleman for the Indiana game following a helmet-to-helmet hit on Illinois backup quarterback Eddie McGee. Ohio State coach Jim Tressel and athletic director Gene Smith issued a joint statement about the suspension: Obviously, we will abide by the one-game suspension from the Big Ten Conference, but we feel as if there was poor judgment throughout...We concur that Kurt's hit was late and a result of poor judgment; he was thus penalized and removed from the game by his coaches.

Warren: 'I caught the ball first'

With all the debate surrounding Ben Chappell's final pass on Saturday against Michigan, I would like to add a very interesting article from ESPN Big Ten blogger Adam Rittenberg. He interviewed Wolverine cornerback Donovan Warren about the call--ruled an interception rather than a simultaneous catch--and whether he indeed picked off Chappell. In the piece, Warren said: "I tried to bait the quarterback and back up a little bit, but I knew I was going to time the route," Warren told me.
