Purdue gets revenge, downs Hoosiers in University Gym

The IU volleyball team upset Purdue in West Lafayette on Sept. 30. Purdue got its revenge Wednesday in University Gym. The Boilermakers (12-12, 4-9) claimed the 2009 Monon Spike by defeating the Hoosiers (14-13, 3-10) by scores of 20-25, 25-23, 25-20 and 25-19. Perhaps the most telling statistic of the match was Purdue's 17 1/2 total team blocks to IU's six.

The Monon Spike, the volleyball equivalent of the Old Oaken Bucket, is up for grabs as the IU volleyball team battles in-state rival Purdue for the second time this season today at 7 p.m.

IU field hockey face Northwestern in Big Ten Tournament

The No. 18 Hoosiers (12-5, 4-2) play the No. 6 seed Northwestern Wildcats in the first round of the Big Ten tournament. Tomorrow's game will start at 3:30 pm in East Lansing, Mich. IU got the three seed for beating Michigan 4-2 this past Saturday and Ohio State's 2-1 victory against Northwestern this past weekend. The Hoosiers beat the Wildcats earlier in the season 2-1 on Oct.

Kirlew named finalist for sportsmanship award

From IU media relations: Indiana senior defensive end Jammie Kirlew is one of 10 finalists for the fifth annual Awards and Recognition Association (ARA) annual sportsmanship award, given to one outstanding NCAA Bowl Division collegiate football player who best personifies the spirit of sportsmanship... ...Kirlew has embraced the student-athlete experience in his time at IU.

Fesenko named female Big Ten Swimmer of the Week

In an exciting day for IU's swimming and diving team, Senior Kate Fesenko was also named Big Ten Swimmer of the Week for the second straight week. The backstroker continues to hold the fastest times in the NCAA in the 100 backstroke and 200 backstroke posting a winning time of 53.30 in the 100 back and 1:55.56 in the 200 back. She also had a second place finish in the 200 individual medley and 100 butterfly.

Knight receives honor of Big Ten Swimmer of the Week

Junior Titus Knight was named Big Ten Swimmer of the Week for the second straight week today. The freestyle swimmer recorded four top-two finishes in the 200 free, 100 free, 500 free and the 200 free relay while competing in Austin, Texas. The Hoosiers are now off until Nov.

Dumes, Finkelmeier likely out for Wednesday exhibition

IU coach Tom Crean met with the media earlier in the hour and, among other things relevant to the upcoming exhibition with Grace College on Wednesday, he updated us on the status of the four guys who sat out at Saturday's Haunted Hall of Hoops scrimmage. Jeremiah Rivers and Matt Roth both had their first full contact practices today.

Yanch's school record 67 helps women's golf to 6th place finish

Freshman Jackie Yanch birdied her final three holes in Tuesday's final round to tie the 18-hole school record, and lead the Hoosiers to a 6th place finish at the Onion Creek Challenge in Austin, Texas. The Hoosiers closed with a final round 283, which is the second lowest 18-hole round in school history. Senior Laura Nochta led the Hoosiers for the fourth consecutive tournament with a 15th place finish and a 214 total. Fellow senior Kellye Belcher was one shot higher than Nochta in 18th place. Yanch's school record 67 moved up her up the individual leaderboard into 32nd place after opening with rounds of 75 and 76. Freshman Pam Burneski closed out the fall season with a 73rd place finish in her fifth tournament of the season. Freshman Kate Coons shot one-over par 71 in the second round and closed the week three shots higher than Burneski in 82nd place. The Onion Creek Challenge marked the end to the fall season for the Hoosiers with finishes of 3rd, 8th, 7th, 7th and 6th in their five tournaments. The Hoosiers will return to competition on Jan.

Coach Lynch press conference notes and quotes; Ray Fisher to have surgery

As usual, IU coach Bill Lynch addressed the media at his weekly Tuesday press conference. Here are some highlights. Officiating In his opening statement, Lynch emphasized there were 173 plays in the Iowa football game. "That's why we talk all the time about 'play the next play' so that when you go back and look it over you don't say, 'it was that play that made the difference in the game'," Lynch said.

This just in from IU media relations: The Indiana University men's basketball program will hold tryouts for potential walk-ons on Thursday, November 12. Time for the tryouts have not been set and those who are interested should contact the men's basketball office at 855-2238 for information on what is required of those trying out.

IU contacts Big Ten concerning officiating

IU coach Bill Lynch said during the weekly radio show that the team has contacted the Big Ten concerning the officiating during Saturday's game against Iowa, specifically a controversial touchdown called back in the third quarter. Prior to the show, host Don Fischer said he would ask one question about the officiating and would not address it any further.

IU men's golf finishes fall in record-breaking fashion

The IU men's golf team won its last tournament of the fall season with a school record 32-under par 832 total at the Renaissance Invitational in Naples, Fla. A second round 271 by the Hoosiers ties the lowest team total in school history.

MacTaggart wins Big Ten title

Josh MacTaggart just doesn't lose. The freshman sensation continued his early season run by claiming a singles title at the Big Ten Indoor Championships on Monday.
