The rivalry has not lost any luster

While everything in Bloomington has changed for the IU men's basketball team in the past three years, one thing has stayed the same. Kelvin Sampson and 15 players have vacated, but the hate all IU students and fans have reserved especially for Purdue and anything West Lafayette hasn't gone anywhere. IU coach Tom Crean -- and every player on his roster -- might not have been here very long, but the fire in fans was evident in the same sense that it has been for the better part of a century. No one was spared on Thursday night. Purdue guard Chris Kramer jawed with fans on his way out of Assembly Hall as they screamed obscenities, former Purdue coach Gene Keady was booed when he showed up at the south entrance of Assembly Hall and current Purdue leader Matt Painter was hit in the head by a piece of paper. He was stunned by the event, swiping a hand through his hair to see if something was still there. Fans had signs that said "I still hate Gene Keady." Others had screaming matches with Purdue fans. And the game showed that the fire is also present on the court.

Free throws hurt IU late in 78-75 loss

What is known as the easiest shot in basketball can be downright costly - if you miss it. The Hoosiers found that out against Purdue Thursday when it missed the front end of three one-and-one free-throw situations in the final four minutes of play. IU led 69-68 with 3:51 left on the clock before freshmen Jordan Hulls and Derek Elston each missed shots from the line. Junior guard Verdell Jones followed with another miss, capping a string of shots that could have resulted in as many as six points. "Certainly the free-throw shooting hurt us," IU coach Tom Crean said.

2010's class compared to previous years

I mentioned in the story that ran in today's paper that IU football recruiting is taken in perspective by the coaching staff. Despite having one of the lowest-ranked classes in the Big Ten for 2010, IU coach Bill Lynch was pleased with the 25-person class and thought his staff "did the best in the Big Ten" because it got the players the team needed. Another element of perspective to look at includes comparing this year's class with previous IU classes.

Players ready for 1st home contest with Purdue in Crean era

IU coach Tom Crean has raved about the fans of IU basketball all season. Regardless how this game turns out, my guess is that he'll have a little to say about them after this next one. Wednesday will see Purdue come to Assembly Hall for the first time in the Crean era. IU only played Purdue once last season, with that coming up in West Lafayette. This time, though, the Boilermakers will travel to Bloomington with the first opportunity to gain consecutive wins against IU since 2000. On Wednesday, IU players were preparing for the No.

Crean emphasizing defense in Purdue contest

IU coach Tom Crean said only a collective effort can slow Purdue and its quick-moving offense. He said he expects his team to make proper rotations, help out teammates and rebound the first miss on the defensive end. "We have to have great team defense," Crean said.

IU football signs 25 for 2010

The IU football team signed 25 players today for its 2010 recruiting class. While the 25 players is the one of the larger 2010 recruiting classes for the Big Ten, the Hoosiers were one of three schools in the Big Ten to not land a four-star recruit, according to Rivals.com, and the Hoosiers were ranked last in the conference for their signing class. IU also signed just 11 3-star players (according to the Rivals' rankings), third fewest in the conference, beating only Ohio State and Penn State in 3-star commitments - both of those schools landed several 4-star recruits. Prominent players on the Hoosiers' signing class include Illinois running back Matt Perez, the Chicago Sun-Times 2009 Illinois Player of the Year.

Big Ten Baseball Season Outlook: Part I

As I mentioned in the Pre-season All-Big Ten Team post comments, I'm going to be waiting until Thursday night to put up the IU seasonal preview because of Media Day that day as well as it being the first time I'll be able to get out and see the team practice (official practice started Monday). Looking back at Illinois

Found the above video on YouTube - the best angle I've seen of the last play considering we were seated behind the scorer's table on the other side of the court near IU's bench. Tidbits from the game: IU was whistled for 21 fouls and Illinois was called for 22, a major difference from the 11-foul discrepancy on Jan.

Mike Tisdale hurts IU -- again

Bruce Weber said one of his assistant coaches put a one on the chalkboard when Illinois went into the locker room at halftime. It was the number of shots Mike Tisdale had taken in the first half. He would get seven more in the second half, and take four free throws in clutch time for Illinois. Tisdale didn't have the same 27 point, 9 rebound effort he had in Bloomington. He also shot 13-of-14 from the free-throw line at the older Assembly Hall. The difference could be credited to his team's avoidance of the post or IU's bigger lineup, as Crean attempted to move away from the three-guard lineup for rebound's sake. When the game was on the line, though, no one other than Tisdale and junior guard Demetri McCamey took a shot. Down the wire, big Tisdale scored every Illinois point between Bill Cole's 3-pointer for 64-64 and McCamey's layup for 72-70. Making free throws and midrange shots, he scored six consecutive baskets, as IU big men struggled to contain the 7-foot-1 center for a second time.

A game of runs

So people always say basketball is a game of spurts. The adage proved true in IU's game against Illinois. The game was very much a back-and-forth contest, with each team taking control at different portions of the contest. Here are some bullets of the runs from Saturday: Illinois began the game with a 9-4 run. IU countered with the Jordan Hulls led 8-4 scoring. The Illini answered with a run of 11-0 from 17-15 to 28-15. From 28-15 to 36-36, IU went on a 21-8 run, culminated with a half-court 3-pointer from senior guard Devan Dumes. The game was tight until IU gained a six-point lead at 55-49.

Hoosiers knock off No. 4 Ohio State, 67-62

Seven IU women's basketball players dressed to defend Assembly Hall against one of the best teams in the nation. In the end, those seven were all the team needed for the school's sororities to storm Branch McCracken Court. The short-staffed Hoosiers (12-10, 5-6) staged a furious defensive effort and held No.
