IU approaching last year's longest conference losing streak

With all the players added this season and progress made earlier in the year, IU has the same problems it had in 2008-09. In fact, it is coming dangerously close to the longest losing streak of last season within conference. The group who began the Crean era grabbed its one win in a convenient place -- for historical purposes, at least. Who wants to combat being the team to lose the most conference games with the longest losing streak in the Big Ten? That Iowa win, thrown right in the middle of IU's conference schedule, separated stints of eight and nine losses.

Looking back on Wisconsin

I'm sure most who follow IU basketball would be willing to concede that its Feb. 13 trip to Madison saw one of the worst IU performances -- even in this spell of eight consecutive losses. The easy rationale for 83-55 the loss comes to mind quickly, and it was written about by everyone after the last game. IU didn't have the metaphorical "fire" that is talked about after every flat performance, the Hoosiers lost to a better team, or the cream and crimson didn't get any scoring. All options would be correct in some sense, but could be easily disproved. The first being "fire." When someone practices all week, prepping for one game, how is it possible not to be excited for the game? The second is facing a better team.

Knight moves to No. 3 in total wins

Knight had already vacated Bloomington for Texas Tech when he tallied his 902nd win, but IU fans still felt that their coach had rightfully become the NCAA's all-time winningest general to pace the sidelines. That mark was changed when Don Meyer of Northern State surpassed Knight and continued on to gain 922 total wins, some of which came at an NAIA school. Knight now must move over once more. Philadelphia men's basketball coach Herb Magee won his 903rd game Tuesday night, moving Knight down to No.

IU Southeast basketbrawl

Turns out, there has been a worse court-storming this year than what happened after the IU-Minnesota game in Jan. In last Thursday's contest between Berea College and Indiana University Southeast, a hard screen turned into an all-out brawl, involving both players and some attending fans.

Defend the rock?

So the design staff isn't my biggest fan. Apparently I write too much, though I contend they aren't giving me enough room - even Brett Finkelmeier got more space than me into today's paper. Either way, when my columns get shortened I try to collect the information that was cut.

Can this team win another game?

After letting recent games against Iowa and Northwestern slip away in this eight-game slide, IU has reached that point. The only remaining contest are at Iowa, Northwestern at home and contests against Wisconsin and Purdue. I think any realistic IU fan would probably rule out Wisconsin at home and certainly swallow their pride to submit to the fact that IU might be bound to lose when it takes for West Lafayette. The other two games are debatable.

Gophers use 1st half 3-pointers to build lead

It happened quickly. IU's 81-58 loss was never in doubt. By the time the first half hit 10 minutes, IU was down 22-9 because of the shooting from Minnesota's Lawrence Westbrook, Devoe Joseph and Damian Johnson. Twelve of those points were from 3-pointers.

Crean prepping for bigger lineup, deadly guards

When IU looked like it had a win, Devoe Joseph made sure his team would get another shot at the Hoosiers. He used his midrange shot to hit consecutive shots, sending the game into overtime. IU is taking steps to make sure that doesn't happen when it plays in "The Barn" on Saturday night. "We have to defend, especially in transition," Crean said.
