Photographer and documentary filmmaker James Balog will give a lecture at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Buskirk-Chumley Theatre as part of the Media School Speaker Series.

Balog’s latest documentary, “The Human Element,” will be screened after his lecture. The film is about human interaction with the elements of fire, water, earth and air. The screening is at 7:30 p.m.

The Media School will also be screening Balog’s 2012 documentary “Chasing Ice” at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Franklin Hall commons. A Q&A session with director Jon Vickers will take place after.

Balog has been a photographer since the early 1980s. His work explores relationships between humans and nature, as well as environmental issues such as climate change. He has worked for SmithsonianMagazine and National Geographic.

After decades spent documenting climate change, Balog said his work is dedicated to raising awareness about humanity’s effect on the environment.

“I’ve had many audiences with climate skeptics or climate deniers in the room — in many cases the majority , and I still have wound up with standing ovations from those crowds,” Balog said in a Stephen Lacey interview with Think Progress.

The event is free and open to the public.
