'Apollo' can turn amateurs into acts

Junior Stephani Parker and senior Alaina Williams will have the opportunity of a lifetime this weekend when they travel to New York City to compete at "Showtime at the Apollo," a singing competition hosted by comedian Mo'Nique. The show is taped for television and viewed by big-name music producers and recorders.

Webmail plagued by worm virus

Opening up an e-mail seemingly from an IU friend could land your computer in serious trouble. IU accounts and mail distribution lists are being distributed without authorization of either the University or the holders of the e-mail accounts, according to the UITS Web site. The mail distribution lists are then being used by "spam-bots" that send out spam messages to the email addresses within the lists.

Open container bill stalls in House

INDIANAPOLIS -- The chairman of a House committee said he may not allow a vote on a bill prohibiting open containers of alcohol in vehicles. A second Senate-passed transportation bill that came before Rep. Mark Lytle's House Public Policy, Ethics and Veterans Affairs Committee on Tuesday also could be in trouble. Homestretch starts with 'U'

With a 12-10 overall record and a 6-5 in the Big Ten, many around Hoosier nation have begun to wonder if IU can make its 19th-straight NCAA appearance. But since the Big Ten went to a 16-game format in the 1997-98 season, every team with at least 10 conference wins has made the Tournament with the exception of ineligible Michigan last year. IU has five games remaining -- four of those at home. The first of those home games is at 8 p.m., tonight against the Minnesota Golden Gophers (9-14, 1-9 Big Ten).

BFC reviews student code

The Bloomington Faculty Council held its first read-through of the updated Student Rights, Responsibilities and Conduct Code Tuesday. The 96-page code, first approved in 1990, has not been updated since 1997. "Since 1997, technology and computers are being used much more at the University, so we added an emphasis on technology," said Mary Popp, co-chair of the University Faculty Committee's Student Affairs Committee. Most of the changes regarding technology refer to how students use electronic resources and access to University computers.

Kerry takes primary

Sen. John Kerry won a narrow victory against Sen. John Edwards in Tuesday's tightly-contested Wisconsin primary. The Wisconsin primary has been the first election held by one state on a single day since the New Hampshire primary, allowing the democratic candidates an equal opportunity to concentrate campaigning efforts in one state.

After graduating a class of seven players last year, IU water polo coach Barry King was left with the challenge of bringing in a large recruiting class to replace the graduates. Returning this season for the Hoosiers is a group of 10 players -- only two of them going into their senior year.

Skating club competes on national level

Five months after becoming an official club sport at IU, the Figure Skating Club has begun to grow into its own on campus. Made up of only 10 competitive and five recreational members, the club's size is small by comparison with other universities, but has shown the drive and determination to compete with larger teams, said the club's founder freshman Katie Laughner.

Mena eyes U.S. national team trip

When Alison Peckinpaugh goes to a party, she's not dressed like most of the other girls. She's not holding a beer and she won't end up in bed with some random guy at the end of the night. While these circumstances are not typical of all party-goers, many students can claim they've done one of these three things sometime in college. But Peckinpaugh won't claim any now she's begun her "walk with Christ."

IU finishes 10th at UCF/Rio Pinar Invite

For the first time since the Northern Intercollegiate golf tournament last September, the IU men's golf team did not finish first place. The Hoosiers entered the UCF/Rio Pinar Invitational, the opening tournament of the spring, ranked as high as No. 19, but were unable to overcome a lackluster first day effort and finished No. 10 in a field of 18. South Alabama took first place after a playoff against host Central Florida.

Leader visits SPEA, gives speech about advocacy organizations

The School of Public and Environmental Affairs will host the leader of the nation's largest nonprofit advocacy organization at 10 a.m. today in the school atrium. Diana Aviv, president and CEO of Independent Sector, will visit the University to present a speech based on public affairs.

Laser tag comes to IMU

Union Board, in conjunction with Paradigm Entertainment, will sponsor IU's first campus-wide laser tag tournament Friday, from 8 p.m. Friday to 2 a.m. Saturday in the Indiana Memorial Union's Alumni Hall. IU After Hours organized the event, which Director David Dawson said he believes will be successful because of "advertising and word of mouth." Dawson, who also enjoys the game, said in the past couple years laser tag has become very popular.
