Iowa State campus festival turns violent AMES, Iowa -- A yearly festival near the Iowa State University campus turned riotous early Sunday when more than 1,000 people vandalized cars, broke storefront windows and tore down street lights, police said.

Kerry says Bush has been 'ineffective' in foreign policy

MIAMI -- Democrat John Kerry accused President Bush Sunday of being "stunningly ineffective" at foreign policy and stuck by his argument that the war against terrorism isn't primarily a military struggle. Kerry, in a wide-ranging interview on NBC's "Meet the Press," also stood by his promise to create 10 million jobs and halve the deficit in his first term if elected, though he conceded soaring red ink could squeeze some proposals.

Bremer: Iraq will not be ready for security by deadline

BAGHDAD, Iraq -- Iraqi security forces will not be ready to protect the country against insurgents by the June 30 handover of power, the top U.S. administrator said Sunday -- an assessment aimed at defending the continued heavy presence of U.S. troops here even after an Iraqi goverment takes over. The unusually blunt comments from L. Paul Bremer came amid a weekend of new fighting that pushed the death toll for U.S. troops in April to 99, already the record for a single month in Iraq and approaching the number killed during the entire war.

Weightlifters converge on Bloomington

This weekend, IU has the distinction of hosting the Midwest Weightlifting Club's regional competition at the University Gym from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event is one of the many tournaments the regional sports club sponsors. May 8, St. Joseph's will host another competition, similar to the one here in Bloomington, which is a team qualifier for athletes to earn a spot at this year's Summer Olympics in Athens. In all, over 150 weightlifters from 35 clubs and 80 colleges and universities in the U.S. will participate. The Snatch and the Clean and Jerk lifts will be used at the competition over the weekend. The competitors will participate in 15 different weight classes ranging from 48 kilograms (106 pounds) to 105 kilograms (231 pounds).

Team Pursuit last series event before running of Little 500

Broken records and America's most famous Little 500 team headlined Thursday night's Team Pursuit in a battle of the Independents versus the Greeks. The finals of what is the last Little 500 series event included what could be a preview of the front stretch come race weekend. Teter women held off pole sitter Kappa Kappa Gamma for the women's Team Pursuit title with a time of 8 minutes and 3.86 seconds -- breaking the record Teter set in their preliminary run of 8:04.75, which bettered Alpha Chi Omega's 1998 record of 8:05.38.

Diplomat killed in Iraq; 3 freed

NAJAF, Iraq -- Gunmen assassinated an Iranian diplomat in Baghdad, Iraq, Thursday just as Iran, with tacit U.S. approval, attempted to mediate with a radical Shiite cleric defying American forces in this southern Iraqi city. Meanwhile, three Japanese were freed by their captors, a day after other kidnappers executed an Italian -- the first-known killing of a hostage in Iraq's wave of kidnappings. The freed Japanese hostages -- two aid workers and a journalist -- were handed over to Islamic clerics in Baghdad after being held for a week. They were later brought to the Japanese Embassy.

Europe rejects purported Bin Laden truce

LONDON -- Key European nations, including Iraq war opponents Germany and France, vigorously rejected a truce offer purportedly from Osama bin Laden Thursday, saying there could be no negotiating with his al Qaeda terrorist network.

Alumnus earns national honor

First it was Hoagy Carmichael in 1953. Then it was E. Branch McCraken in 1959, and Col. Ronald J. Webb in 1999. Now, IU Kelly School of Business alumnus Todd Wagner is doing IU more justice, as he was recently named "Kappa Sigma Fraternity Man of the Year." Wagner will be honored at a reception and dinner program at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at the Indianapolis Artsgarden for receiving the prestigious national award.

Hours after Adam W. Herbert was officially inaugurated as the 17th president of IU, another ceremony welcomed a new president on the Bloomington campus. Senior Tyson Chastain was inaugurated as the new student body president for the IU Student Association Thursday evening in the Oak Room of the Indiana Memorial Union.

IU welcomes Adam W. Herbert

In the lobby of the IU Auditorium Thursday, IU President Adam W. Herbert reflected on his first eight months as president only minutes after his inauguration. Mounds of his favorite oatmeal raisin cookies beckoned, but he only had time for one. Thursday was a day to celebrate, as Herbert became the 17th president to be inaugurated at IU.

Season rolls on, honors roll in for Overton

As the men's golf team continues its stretch of five tournaments in five weekends this Saturday and Sunday at the Kepler Intercollegiate in Columbus, Ohio, its has many advantages going for it. The Hoosiers are coming off a fifth-place finish at the Boilermaker Invitational last weekend, their fourth consecutive top-five finish.

2nd place Hoosiers take on rivals

Coming off its most impressive road performance of the spring season, the IU women's tennis team (13-6, 5-1 Big Ten) looks to round out its four-game road stretch by adding two more tallies to the win column. The Hoosiers go back out on the road to face No. 37 Iowa Saturday before taking on the Golden Gophers of Minnesota Sunday morning.

Split team heads to Nebraska for meet

The men's track team will compete in two different meets this weekend. The bulk of the team will compete at Nebraska in a quadrangular meet, and IU distance runners with a shot at qualifying for the NCAA regional will travel to California to compete in the Mt. SAC Relays -- a traditional gathering place for top-flight distance competition.

IU swinging one more time

The IU women's golf team will travel to the Lady Boilermaker Invitational this weekend as it draws toward the end of the spring season. The tournament will be held Saturday and Sunday at the Kampen Golf Course in West Lafayette. Teams will play 36 holes Saturday and the final 18 Sunday. Nine of the 11 Big Ten schools will be participating at the tournament, as only Ohio State and Penn State will not make the trip.

Hoosiers begin quest for conference championship

After wrapping up a solid regular season two weeks ago in the Fluid Four Invitational, the IU women's water polo team is gearing up for another run at the Collegiate Water Polo Association conference championship and a trip back to the NCAA Final Four.
