Morale committee keeps spirits high for 36-hour event

Chairs slide across the tiled floor, and papers shuffle. Students clad in sweatpants, T-shirts and gym shoes shuffle into the brightly lit basement of Kappa Delta sorority, laughing and making wisecracks. The mood is light and the students greet each other with warm smiles and hugs. They are here to learn a line dance.

Indiana Invitational ends fall season

The IU women's tennis team will close the fall season this weekend at the IU Tennis Center by playing host to the Indiana Invitational. Three other schools come into town this weekend including in-state rivals Notre Dame and Purdue along with DePaul University for the three-day tournament.

IU poised to take on Michigan State

The IU women's field hockey team is set to take on Michigan State at this weekend's Big Ten tournament. IU has yet to win a conference tournament game, but the Hoosiers are coming off their best season since the program restarted in 2000. The team's 12 wins are the most in school history. "The fact that we've played Michigan State recently gives us an advantage," said IU coach Amy Roberston. "We should be able to make some adjustments and play well."

Big Weekend for the women's swim and dive The No. 17 IU women's swimming and diving team is gearing up for a tough weekend as it plays host to Big Ten rival Northwestern, Kentucky and Southwest Missouri State University.

Among the many cornfields and farms that reside in the countryside of Illinois lies the university, another Big Ten school that places much more emphasis on basketball than football. This weekend, the Hoosiers travel to Champaign to face the Fighting Illini on the Illini's Senior Day.

Champaign wishes or victory dreams?

The last time the Hoosiers came off a win against a Top 25 team they followed it up with a bad loss against the University of Kentucky, which started a five-game losing streak. IU hopes to avoid another letdown after a 30-21 victory against then-No. 24 Minnesota when the Hoosiers travel to Champaign, Ill., to play the Fighting Illini 2 p.m Saturday at Illinois' Memorial Stadium.

Nets sign IU grad Frank to 4-year contract extension

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- New Jersey Nets coach Lawrence Frank has signed a four-year, $10 million contract extension. The deal was announced by the team Thursday, about 12 hours after the worst opening-night loss in Nets' history, 100-77 to Shaquille O'Neal and the Miami Heat.

In the end, the convention wisdom was that conventional wisdom didn't really matter this election. Tonight and Saturday, Nell Weatherwax will let movement take over her body in her improvisational autobiographical show "Dreaming on Your Feet" as part of the Bloomington Playwrights Project's Dark Alley late night series.

J-School Library reopens today

After a year of planning and months of construction, the Weil Journalism Library located inside Ernie Pyle Hall will reopen today. The newly renovated facility offers 11 Macintosh and PC units. Many of the computers are set up in a group-station arrangement to aid students and faculty members when working with each other. Wireless Internet and laptop ports are also available at similar computer stations.

Potpourri brings variety of traditions

R. Kelley songs, spirituals and dances will be performed at the African American Arts Institute's A Potpourri of Arts in the African American Tradition at 8 p.m. Saturday evening at the IU Auditorium. All three branches of the AAAI -- IU Soul Revue, African American Choral Ensemble and African American Dance Company -- will perform separately before a finale with all three groups performing to contemporary music by R. Kelley.

Famous pianist astounds audience

Then the term "child prodigy" is spoken, Mozart usually pops into mind. Wednesday night at the IU Auditorium a similar present-day musical child prodigy, though a child no longer, was seen in performance. Lang Lang, the brilliant Chinese pianist whose public career began at five and reached international fame at 17, made an appearance at IU, both to give a concert and to discuss his interpretations with piano students in the School of Music.
