One Last Time

One last hurrah. The 2004 class of Hoosier football players will suit up for the final time at Memorial Stadium Saturday against the 2-7 Penn State Nittany Lions. While 18 players will say goodbye to their home turf, all the players remain vigilant in their quest to beat Penn State despite the lack of a bowl bid. Senior safety Herana-Daze Jones said the team still has high expectations for Saturday's game, and he fully believes the Hoosiers can pull out a victory.

Former 'Times of India' editor speaks at IU

There is more to India than it just being a country to which jobs are outsourced. It is an example of a democracy that works in its truest sense. This was the message of Gautam Adhikari, former executive editor for The Times of India, a visiting fellow at the American Enterprise Institute and a consultant at the World Bank, who spoke Thursday evening in the Student Building.

N. Korea rights act passes

The North Korean Human Rights Act was signed into law by President George W. Bush Oct. 18 after months of lobbying by four IU student groups. The bill enables North Koreans to stay in the United States as refugees and includes a humanitarian aid package, as well as the appointment of a special envoy for North Korean human rights.

Many TV stations saving 'Private Ryan' over FCC sanctions

NEW YORK -- More than 20 ABC affiliates around the country announced that they wouldn't take part in the network's Veterans Day airing of "Saving Private Ryan," saying the acclaimed film's violence and language could draw sanctions from the Federal Communications Commission.

'Cosmopolitan' captures New York, Paris

Forum to discuss terrorism issues

GLBT office still needed

Man hands note to police dispatcher, shoots himself WHITING, Ind. -- A man walked into the city's police station, handed the dispatcher a note through a bulletproof window, then pulled out a gun and shot himself once in the head, police said. Victor Midkiff, 54, an electrician's assistant for the city, fatally shot himself about 11 a.m. Wednesday. A note inside the envelope read, "Call my brother," and gave his phone number, Detective Donald Greer said.

Former professor reflects on life as civil liberties activist

Family, peers, education, religion and income are all examples of life conditions that influence political ideologies. Professor Emeritus of Germanic Studies Frank Banta grew up as a member of what he said he thinks was probably the only democratic family in a totally republican farm community. A friend once told Banta he is the "only living fifth-generation Hoosier Democrat."

Last week, Gulf War veteran David Miyasato filed a federal lawsuit against the Army claiming that its mobilization order that required him to report for duty was illegal. After all, Miyasato was discharged in 1996 after completing his eight-year stint.
