Local Artists celebrate 'father of bluegrass' Saturday

Jim Richter wants to bring support back to bluegrass music in Bloomington. Richter is organizing a workshop and concert in honor of former Bloomington-area patron Bill Monroe, widely known as "the father of bluegrass." Monroe is revered for having the biggest influence in the creation and popularization of bluegrass. Monroe's popularization of bluegrass began in 1939 with the first edition of the "Blue Grass Boys." The band coined the term "bluegrass," which was a reference to Kentucky where Monroe was born.

Risking life and limb

Very few professions ask community members to risk their life for the greater community good. For local police officers and firefighters, risking life and limb is part of their job description and their daily sacrifice is often unnoticed until the community is asked to mourn the loss of a peace officer's life.

IU to pay state for excess aid

The implementation of the PeopleSoft student information software system at the start of the 2004-2005 academic year resulted in the distribution of approximately $274,000 in excess financial aid, according to an audit report. An internal financial aid program written by the University and run on the PeopleSoft system did not recognize situations in which the awarded aid should have been reduced, IU Director of Media Relations Larry MacIntyre said in an e-mail. The excess awards resulted from students receiving too much in federal student loans. IU returned the excess money although students did not have to repay the University. The noncompliance with federal regulations was found during an annual audit, said Paul Joyce, deputy state examiner for the Indiana State Board of Accounts.

Court rules in favor of IU trustees

The Indiana Court of Appeals ruled Friday in favor of the IU board of trustees that Indiana's Open Door Law was not violated in the 2000 firing of former men's basketball coach Bob Knight.
