IU’s Mini University record-setting enrollment tops last year’s class of 468; program begins on June 17

For the first time in the program’s 35-year history, registration for IU’s popular Mini University has topped last year’s record-setting enrollment of 468, prompting organizers to close registration.

IU names new director to lead AIDS research on campus

As the global AIDS epidemic becomes an increasingly prominent international issue, the IU Center for AIDS Research has named Dr. Johnny J. He its new director. Under this new leadership, the institution plans to step up its fight against the disease.

Tony Sams, editorial adviser and production director at the Indiana Daily Student, explained at one point last week that many hearts were broken after the unexpected loss of IU Student Media Director David Adams, referring to a quote from “The Wizard of Oz,” one of Adams’ favorite movies.

Retirement policy still in place 5 years later

Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Linguistics Paul Newman challenged IU’s policy on mandatory retirement five years ago when he became interested in a part-time position as associate dean of the faculties. Newman was told he was ineligible because he was too old.

Orientation to begin Tuesday

Starting Tuesday, for the next six weeks nearly between 6,000 and 7,000 new IU students will come to campus for Freshman Orientation in preparation for their August move-in day. Associate Director of Orientation Programs Melanie Payne explained that all orientation programs are two days, and there are 41 separate programs. Payne said Orientation helps acclimate students not only to campus but also to the services and programs IU offers.

But residents across the state are having greater difficulty making this dream a reality. As admissions standards begin to rise, Indiana public school systems seem to be lacking in preparatory methods.

The Scarlet Knights of Rutgers University have a lot to be proud of this year, which is a unique feeling for a school that hasn’t won a national championship since 1949 – and for fencing at that. Their women’s basketball team was thrust into the national spotlight for their run to the national championship and for their unshakable poise after shock-jock Don Imus called the squad a bunch of “nappy headed hoes.” Even more impressive was the perennially unremarkable football team, which fought to win their first bowl game since, oh, the beginning of recorded history or so.

Kinsey Institute will miss Dave Adams

David was such a tremendous asset to the IDS and to the entire community of student media. He gave us tremendous support in our work in communicating about sexual health and sex information to college students, encouraging us to publish Kinsey Confidential in the IDS, and promoting the column to other student newspapers around the country.
