Whether the women's soccer team wanted it or not, they received an added challenge this week. As if starting the Big Ten schedule wasn't enough and playing one of the top teams in the conference wouldn't suffice, a certain Sunday press conference added another aspect to this week's practices ' focus.

The men's soccer team took more than 84 minutes to score a goal against unranked IU-Purdue University at Indianapolis Wednesday night at Bill Armstrong Stadium.

Fullbacks play vital role for Hoosiers

Fullbacks are often the players on a football team who are suppose to do the dirty work. Whether it's clearing the way for the tailback or throwing a block to protect a quarterback, fullbacks often do things that don't find their way onto the stat sheet.

Correction

IU basketball secretary Mary Ann Davis said last night she is not filing a grievance against Jeanette Hartgraves, a secretary in the athletic department. In an interview with the IDS Wednesday, former coach Bob Knight said his secretaries were filing a grievance, but it was later clarified that Knight was talking about an event in the past. The IDS regrets this error.

Knight bids farewell

“The General” had his last stand Wednesday night in front of more than 6,000 people. Coach Knight bid IU goodbye in an emotional speech in Dunn Meadow. Bob Knight fans and protesters from across the region turned out to hear what he had to say. Knight addressed everything from his future plans to the reason for his termination.

Club cycling looks to continue successful season

The tradition of great cycling at IU has long been at the center of campus attention. The student body embraced the annual Little 500 and the nation fell in love with the inspirational Bloomington-based film "Breaking Away." So it should come with no great surprise that the IU Cycling Club has attained great success.

Midfielder sets pace for Hoosiers

One might think when a team loses its leading scorer to graduation, the second leading returning scorer would feel added pressure to pick up the lead. Someone forgot to tell that to junior midfielder Kelly Kram. Kram shrugged off the pressure going into this year and is more focused on having fun and working together as a team to accomplish goals.

Two late goals boost IU to victory

IU's men's soccer team was as unlucky as possible Wednesday against IU-Purdue University at Indianapolis. The Hoosiers outshot the Jaguars 25-3 but still only managed two goals in a 2-0 victory. Both goals came in the final six minutes of play, with sophomore midfielder Pat Noonan finally giving the Hoosiers a 1-0 lead with 5:38 remaining. Junior midfielder Ryan Mack got IU an insurance goal just 59 seconds later, tapping in a rebound from just one yard away.

Hoosiers to face potent Wildcats

To put it in nice terms, the IU defense struggled in the Hoosiers' season-opening 41-38 loss to North Carolina State Saturday at Memorial Stadium. Things won't get much easier for the Hoosiers this Saturday night when they travel to Kentucky to take on the Wildcats and their "Air Raid" offense. Last weekend, IU saw Wolfpack freshman quarterback Philip Rivers throw for 401 yards and five touchdowns as he rallied his team back from deficits of 18 and 15 points. This week, Wildcat redshirt-freshman quarterback Jared Lorenzen will have his crack at the Hoosiers.

Coach reflects on 1987 championship game

Indiana was down 73-72 with under 15 seconds to play. Smart passed to Thomas in the post. Thomas kicked it back out to Smart. From the baseline, Smart, to win the game … In the 1987 NCAA title game, senior guard Keith Smart's 15-foot jumper from the left corner with six seconds remaining in the game won the national championship, 74-73 against Syracuse.

Knight rebuts 'zero-tolerance' claims

Bob Knight sat on his back porch Wednesday morning with his attorney to his left and one of his best friends to his right. His wife Karen was inside their home. These are now the people he surrounds himself with ' family, friends and attorneys. These are the relationships the former coach has sustained. After about three days of "I-said-he-said" debates, a man who is arguably one of the country's greatest basketball coaches, was fired. But the tension began long ago.

Fellow coaches weigh in on Knight's future

Pure. Sensitive. Genius. It only took a few seconds for former Hoosier star Isiah Thomas to narrow Bob Knight down to those three words. Now Thomas wants those characteristics working for him and the Indiana Pacers.

Fife, Moye to stay

Junior guard Dane Fife spent Monday night at a Bloomington comedy club. While he was sitting in the audience, the onstage comedian pleaded for Fife to stay at IU. The students in attendance then started cheering for Fife, who announced early in the day he was transferring from IU because of Bob Knight's removal as basketball coach.

Bob Knight said that if he had taken a year to go out and find a place ideal for himself, he could not find a better place than Bloomington. He's uncovered the best hunting and fishing spots in the area. He also said the best crowds in the country are found in Assembly Hall. And certainly, the city is home to a few of his closest friends.

Davis named interim coach

At 4:10 p.m. Tuesday, the turmoil surrounding the IU basketball team ended when Mike Davis was named interim head coach by athletics director Clarence Doninger. John Treloar was named interim associate head coach.

'The General' speaks about the much-celebrated 1970s

When Bob Knight came to interview for the position as head coach at IU, he only needed 15 minutes with athletics director Ed Cady to outline what would be the platform for his next 29 years. He wanted Cady to know how he would stress defense, something the fans weren't used to. He wanted no interference with the way he ran the program. And he wanted Cady to know what kind of kids he was looking to recruit: talented and committed ones. Knight got the job.

Cameron fined $10,000 for remarks

Football coach Cam Cameron was fined $10,000 by the Big Ten office Tuesday for remarks directed at officials after Saturday's loss to North Carolina State. The fine will be taken from IU's share of network TV money. Cameron apologized to both the media and IU fans Tuesday at his weekly news conference.

Young players add depth

The best thing about freshmen is they become sophomores, men's soccer coach Jerry Yeagley said about sophomore forward Michael Bock in August.
