Women shine in opener

The IU women's tennis team defeated Bowling Green State University and the University of Cincinnati in its first two team matches of the year Sunday. The score in both matches was 7-0. The team swept all of the doubles matches. IU's No. 1 doubles team, junior Karie Schlukebir and sophomore Linda Tran, only lost three sets in the two matches they played; defeating Bowling Green 8-2 and Cincinnati 8-1. "I think all in all every one played great," Schlukebir said. "Every one was a little nervous, but everyone played very well." "I thought we competed well," coach Lin Loring said. "There were a couple matches that were close, and we won all the close ones. We didn't get more injured, so that was the other good news for the weekend."

Post play falls apart in 5th consecutive loss

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Reliable Jill Chapman has hoisted her unsteady teammates on her back, carrying the Hoosiers in improbable, narrow losses against formidable Big Ten opponents and consistently decorating the box score this season. But the IU center didn't reveal her usual, dependable self Sunday against Michigan (12-7, 2-6 Big Ten) in a 68-55 loss. After averaging 20 points in her career against the Wolverines, Chapman remained on the bench for most of the game, her chin resting on her fist as she watched the Hoosiers stumble in rebounding for the sixth consecutive game.

OSU expected Odle's explosion

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Jim O'Brien had a plan Saturday: let Jarrad Odle score at will, let Jared Jeffries score every so often and don't let IU's guards get any momentum from the three-point line. His plan worked like a charm in Ohio State's 73-67 victory in front of 19,200 in Value City Arena. Odle tied a career high with 16 points, Jeffries scored 22 and IU hit just six three-pointers. The Hoosiers didn't hit their first three-pointer until 2:42 remained in the first half. No. 25 IU (11-6, 4-1 Big Ten) shot two of six from beyond the arc in the first half, far from equaling the impressive performances it achieved in its two previous Big Ten games. In victories over Michigan State and Iowa, IU hit 18 of its 29 first-half three-point tries, but Saturday was a different story. And O'Brien, OSU's fourth-year head coach, had it all figured out.

Team looks to overcome deficit

Coming off a dominating performance against Ohio State in their first dual meet after winter training, the IU swimmers will face a tougher challenge Saturday when they host in-state rival No. 22 Purdue. The Boilermakers come into the meet with a 5-1 overall record and a 3-0 mark in Big Ten duals. The No. 19 Hoosiers hold a 3-0-1 overall record, with a 2-0-1 record in Big Ten competition.

'Courageous' diver impacts team

Originally a swimmer, sophomore Alex Burns didn't make the shift to diving competitively until his freshman year in high school. Since then, Burns has improved each year, a trend that head coach Jeff Huber hopes will continue.

Hoosiers ready to race foes

The men's track team will have its second home meet of the season this weekend at the Gladstein Fieldhouse. This week's competition brings in two Big Ten foes, Ohio State and Penn State. This is Ohio State's first road meet of the season. Ohio State won its season opener last week by defeating Indiana State and Western Carolina. Penn State also won its season opener, after defeating seven teams in the U.S. Coaches Series Meet.

IU faces Buckeyes, Salukis

As tomorrow\'s three-way meet versus Ohio State and Southern Illinois approaches, head coach Randy Heisler and his staff have been drilling the women\'s track team. \"Southern Illinois is very strong in jumps, and Ohio State is strong in throws, so it will be important to put up points in many areas,\" said junior All-American Rachelle Boone.

Men begin spring season

The IU men\'s tennis prepares to open its spring season as freezing temperatures remain the norm. After limited action in the fall and two weeks worth of practice in January the men\'s team is ready to enter the spring season this weekend. What lies ahead for Ken Hydinger\'s crew, a team that went 5-5 in the Big Ten and 14-9 overall last year? That's anyone\'s guess. Still, a cheat sheet couldn\'t hurt.

Showdown for first place

The NFL: Anyone can win it all

There is no argument that the National Football League is full of parity. It's been that way ever since 1998, when the Atlanta Falcons came from nowhere to run off a 13-3 season and a trip to the Super Bowl. The following season, the St. Louis Rams and Indianapolis Colts went from cellar dwellers to powerhouses. Every team now knows it has a shot at the Super Bowl every year. Critics have been having a field day. This parity, they claim, has taken away one of sports' greatest phenomena -- the dynasty.

Hoosiers ready for Boilermakers

Purdue coach Kristy Curry admits she feels insecure about her No. 11 Boilermakers playing IU tonight at Assembly Hall. Why would she think this way about her 2001 NCAA runner-up and Big Ten champion squad? For one thing, Purdue (13-3, 4-2 Big Ten) has dropped two Big Ten games on the road. In fact, all three of the Boilermakers' losses have occurred away from the normally-packed Mackey Arena in West Lafayette.

Jeffries adjusting to being 'the man'

Jared Jeffries was having a hard time adjusting to being IU's go-to guy. Coach Mike Davis said it, and Jeffries admitted it. That was before last week. The 6-foot-9 sophomore forward torched Michigan State and Iowa, leading the Hoosiers to back-to-back victories over ranked opponents and carrying them to the top spot in the Big Ten. His efforts earned him Big Ten Player of the Week honors, the conference announced this week. It is Jeffries' second Player of the Week award this season -- his other came Dec. 10, 2001 -- and the second of his career.

After four straight league titles, MSU starts slow

Michigan State is used to expectations. That's what four consecutive Big Ten regular season titles and three consecutive Final Four appearances will do to a program. Throw in a National Championship in 2000, and the Spartans are supposed to be on top of the Big Ten.

Young players earn increased time on ice

The men's hockey team learned some disappointing news over the winter break. The announcement was that defenseman Andy Bauermeister and forward Trent Washburn had left the team for personal reasons.

Beyond expectations

When Jenn Christy graduated from IU last spring, the IU women's swimming team lost their most accomplished swimmer of all-time in terms of awards and records. Christy is the school record holder in the 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard freestyle and was a ten time All-American during her career as a Hoosier. Heading into this year, head coach Dorsey Tierney knew it wouldn't be easy to fill the role in the sprint events left by Christy's departure. But after swimming behind Christy last year and participating with Christy on the IU free relay teams, junior Anne Williams has stepped up for the Hoosiers.

Swimmers enjoy early success

"Who was that guy in lane 6?" A stunned Ohio State head coach Bill Wadley asked the scorers table following sophomore Claes Andersson's second place, career-best finish in the 100-yard freestyle during Saturday's dual match against the Buckeyes. While Wadley hadn't heard of Andersson, who earlier won the 50-yard freestyle, the Hoosiers are hoping his solid performance will soon make him the talk of the Big Ten. "He is probably the fastest swimmer I have ever coached," head coach Kris Kirchner said. "He is a contender to win at Big Tens. At the national level, he should be at the NCAAs. He is a very good athlete, is very talented and he has done some amazing things in the last year."

Poms squad achieves goal

Hard work and perseverance paid off in the end for the IU poms squad and the all-female crimson cheer squad. After learning Nov. 24 that the pom squad\'s funding for their trip to the 2002 College Nationals had been canceled, the entire IU cheer and dance program chipped in to help pay for the trip. \"The whole program had to go out and get money and get donations and sponsors," said senior and crimson squad captain Karmen McCracken.

Offensive outburst fuels win over rivals

Performing in front of their largest home crowd of the season, the men's club hockey team were faced with the difficult task of trying to outdo their previous night's 14-0 thrashing of Purdue. Luckily for the 700-plus in attendance at the Frank Southern Ice Arena Saturday night, the Hoosiers (12-3-1, 2-1-1) still had a few tricks left up their sleeve, thoroughly dominating the Boilermakers en route to a 17-1 victory.

More wrestlers head to injured list in Virginia

The short-handed IU wrestling team didn't need any more injuries this weekend. Unfortunately, senior heavyweight D.J. Radnovich and junior Ty Matthews were lost for at least six weeks, possibly for the season.
