GRAND RAPIDS, MI -- The women's basketball team has shown many similarities to its male counterpart this season. Both squads are operating under a first-year coach, have unnerving tendencies to blow big leads and had the ability to beat a Minnesota basketball team within 24 hours of each other.
IU President Myles Brand announced today that Michael McNeely will replace retiring athletics director Clarence Doninger in July.
According to Colorado news outlets, Colorado State University athletics director Tim Weiser -- the frontrunner to replace athletics director Clarence Doninger -- withdrew his name from consideration Wednesday. Colorado State sports information director Gary Ozzello spoke with Weiser Wednesday, and said Weiser plans to remain in Fort Collins, Colo. "When I spoke to him today, he reiterated to me that he was at Colorado State and that he anticipated being there for a long time," Ozzello told The Associated Press.
As interim head coach Mike Davis was introduced in Assembly Hall Wednesday night, IU legend Walt Bellamy stood and applauded. But he wasn't just being polite. He's a big Mike Davis fan. So is Kent Benson. Damon Bailey is, too. Add Calbert Cheaney, Archie Dees, Bob Leonard and Jimmy Rayl to the list. On a night celebrating the last century of Indiana basketball, the hot topic of conversation was the future of IU basketball and whether it should include Davis.
Junior Alison Cooke's approach to pitching is perhaps best summarized by her catcher, junior Brooke Monroe. "She's really smart," Monroe said of Cooke on the mound. "She remembers whether a batter got a hit or not, where they hit it, when they hit it. She always tells us who's coming up in the batting order. She's been a very effective leader."
There's a sense of excitement in the Big Ten this week. But for the most part, it's in all of the wrong places.
The last time IU faced Minnesota, the Hoosiers defeated the Golden Gophers by 29 points.
The final home game of the season is usually dedicated to the seniors on the Hoosier roster, but this team doesn't have any. Instead, IU played like it was the last game in Assembly Hall for interim head coach Mike Davis, whose future at the University remains uncertain.
Most indications are that IU President Myles Brand will name Colorado State athletics director Tim Weiser IU's next athletics director, possibly by the end of the week. Trustee Stephen Backer said he wouldn't be surprised if Brand names Weiser to the position. "I think he was No. 1 on the list," Backer said. "That's what I was hearing."
Five games for all the marbles. The hockey team knows as much about pressure as any other team in the country, but this is the culmination of every goal the team has been talking about all year. Of course, it's not going to be an easy road to victory in the Division II American Collegiate Hockey Association's national championship.
Jill Chapman topped a list of two IU players among the Big Ten's best.
Temperatures hovering near 40 degrees and winds howling around 10 mph aren't exactly pitcher-friendly conditions. The IU pitching staff didn't seem to notice the weather.
Practice was long over. Interim head coach Mike Davis let the players out after only 35 minutes of basketball Tuesday.
Much can change in four years. Senior Milan Rakvica can vouch for that. Four years ago, Rakvica was in the Czech Republic studying at a local university. Looking to study elsewhere, he spoke with friend and fellow tennis player, Ondrej Holik, who had just been hired as an assistant coach with IU's men's tennis team. Holik, from the same town as Rakvica, brought his prospect to coach Ken Hydinger.
The Hoosiers opened the home part of their lacrosse schedule Saturday against Buffalo.

Kathi Bennett spoke. Rachael Honegger cried. Rainey Alting wiped tears from her face. Alting took the microphone and cried. Heather Cassady sat on the bench, head in her hands. When Honegger spoke, no one could keep their eyes dry. On the most emotional day of the year -- emblazoned with its most important game -- IU soared and sputtered with its emotions in its 54-50 loss to Illinois.
The women's basketball team took the floor at Northwestern's Welsh-Ryan Arena with a mission. The Hoosiers' objective? To beat Northwestern, a team that has found no success in the Big Ten this season.
The women's tennis team started the season strong but has hit a dry spell in its last four games. Sunday in Knoxville, Tenn., was no different, as IU fell to Tennessee, 4-3. The Hoosiers (7-3, 1-0 Big Ten) have now lost three of their last four matches, with the only win coming against Big Ten foe Iowa. Tennessee swept the Hoosiers in doubles to pick up the match's first point. All three matches were relatively close, but IU couldn't counter the Volunteer attack. IU battled back but lost both the No. 1 and No. 2 singles matches.
