One big reason for the IU men's track and field team's early success is the talented team members.\nSenior Wasyl Fedoriw is one of these talented athletes, not only in the shot put and the weight throw, but in the classroom, as well. This year, Fedoriw came back to the track and field team for his final year of eligibility. He got accepted to medical school last year but decided to wait until next year to enter.\n"Part of the reason was track," Fedoriw said. "I (also) felt that there were a couple of things that I hadn't done yet."\nFedoriw graduated with a degree in biochemistry last year and needed some type of classes to take. He decided to major in Spanish and is taking a full load of Spanish classes to pick up another degree. \nIn his scarce spare time, Fedoriw is assistant instructor for chemistry and does research in biochemistry. He's participated in intramural basketball for several years, and last year his team played in Assembly Hall and won its division championship. \nFedoriw's track season has looked bright so far, as well. Last weekend, he set a new school record in the shot put. His coaches and teammates were not surprised.\n"I wasn't surprised," coach Marshall Goss said. "I was surprised by the amount he broke the school record by."\nJunior Mike Minton, Fedoriw's teammate, said focus and hard work have led Fedoriw's his success.\n"All the work he as done over the years has prepared him for this moment," Minton said. "He is very dedicated to his sport."\nThat dedication has helped Fedoriw through tough injuries. He overcome a broken ankle and had to recover from surgery on his elbow. \n"Wasyl and I have worked great as a team pushing each other in the weight room," Minton said. "We have been known to be pretty intenseā¦but now it is paying off."\nFedoriw's work ethic has spread to his teammates, and his performance has had a huge effect on the team.\n"Wasyl's performance shows what persistence can do," Goss said. "People say, 'If Wasyl can do it, then I can do it.'"\nFedoriw has big goals for this season. He wants to qualify for the NCAAs in both the shot put and weight throw for the indoor season and the shot put and hammer throws for outdoor. Fedoriw also wants to place high in the Big Ten championships.\n"If you put enough time into something and have the appropriate dedication," he said, "then you will reach your goals"
