Women's golf finishes tourney

After posting both season-high and season-low rounds during its spring tournament, the women's golf team played more consistently Monday and Tuesday at the "Mo" memorial in Houston, Texas. But that consistency didn't mean the Hoosiers played well. They shot rounds of 323 and 319 to finish in sixth place.

INDIANAPOLIS -- Before the beginning of the Big Ten women's basketball tournament Thursday, the Hoosiers postseason future was already determined -- there wasn't one. But a run to the tournament's championship game -- the first time in the school's history and the first No. 5 seed to do so -- and a win against No. 1 Purdue in the semifinal and a three-point win versus No. 2 Penn State in the championship changes the plans.

The fuss over the Big Ten Player of the Year keeps brewing. The Big Ten will announce its awards today -- All-Big Ten teams and individual honors -- but coaches let their thoughts fly Monday. Illinois' Bill Self touted junior guard Frank Williams. Michigan State's Tom Izzo flaunted sophomore guard Marcus Taylor. IU's Mike Davis boasted about sophomore forward Jared Jeffries.

Team plays waiting game

Most students were watching the IU men's basketball team claim a share of the Big Ten title, the men's track and field team was competing for the opportunity to qualify for the NCAA Championships. The team sent four athletes to Iowa State and six to Notre Dame. There were several provisional marks met and many personal records set at the two meets.

Hoosiers fall short of national title

It was supposed to be the IU hockey team's year. This year's Hoosiers had everything: speed, depth, goaltending and special teams. And they had experience in the form of nine seniors. If any group had the chance to win an American Collegiate Hockey Association National Championship, this was the one.

Women split weekend matches

The women's tennis team returned to Bloomington after splitting its two away matches this weekend. After opening the weekend with a win at Illinois State, the Hoosiers dropped their Big Ten opener in a close match to Iowa, 4-3.

The IU men's tennis team looked forward to the challenge Northwestern would present in the conference opener. The challenge would take the form of a 5-2 loss against the Wildcats Saturday. The Hoosiers (6-4, 0-1 Big Ten) opened up their four-game road trip with a difficult setback at Northwestern (9-3, 4-0).

Men's team finishes 7th, its worst finish since 1954

The Hoosiers struggled on the last two days of the Big Ten Championships, falling from fifth after the first day to a seventh place finish when the final scores were tallied. Reigning Big Ten champion Minnesota continued its conference domination, as the Golden Gophers outdueled Michigan to defend their title. Minnesota finished with 711.5 points, and the Wolverines had 636.5.

Team gets one more crack at Big Ten crown

Any piece -- no matter if it's divided two, three or four ways -- is better than none. Ask IU, which looked primed for its first Big Ten championship since 1993 before losing back-to-back games at Michigan State and No. 15 Illinois. IU muffed its chances to win the league outright, but the No. 25 Hoosiers get one more crack at halting the nine-year Big Ten drought at 2:30 p.m. Saturday when they welcome Northwestern to Assembly Hall on Senior Day. With a victory, IU will guarantee itself at least a share of the Big Ten crown.

No. 5 Hoosiers open tourney

A sign in the women's basketball locker room reads "Did You Forget?" with the score of the Hoosiers' most recent game in a Big Ten tournament -- an 81-76 loss to Iowa. Senior point guard Heather Cassady hasn't forgotten. She wouldn't forget a painful, five-point defeat to the eventual tournament champion. Even more tortuous is the fact that the Hoosiers allowed an 18-point halftime lead to collapse.
