Associate athletic director appointed

Associate Athletic Director Mary Ann Rohleder announced Wednesday that Amelia Noel will replace Elizabeth "Buzz" Kurpius as associate athletic director for academic affairs, effective Jan. 1.

Basketball team gains an assistant

Former Ohio State University assistant coach Les Fertig has joined the IU basketball coaching staff as an administrative assistant. Fertig arrived on campus Monday and was in Assembly Hall teaching the coaching basketball class Tuesday morning. He will spend the rest of the week moving from Columbus to Bloomington and assume his duties Sept. 12.

Earlier this summer, New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner told Drew Henson he would make the young phenom a Yankee for life if he would quit playing football. Many would not be able to refuse the offer to play with baseball's most historic team, but Henson could not let his dream of leading the University of Michigan to a national championship die.

Coach shuffles soccer team's starting lineup

Men's soccer coach Jerry Yeagley didn't like what he saw offensively Friday night when IU played Portland, and he didn't hesitate to change his lineup. In hopes of getting center midfielders Ryan Mack, a junior, and Pat Noonan, a sophomore, more involved in the attack, Yeagley tried several lineups against Portland Friday and UCLA Saturday.

IU men's soccer coach Jerry Yeagley said during two-day practices his team hadn't been tested. He said after two exhibition games it hadn't been tested.

Bruins outplay national champs

Junior midfielder Ryan Mack choked on his words as he talked about the penalty kick he missed in IU's 2-1 loss to UCLA Saturday night. Blades of grass clung to his elbows and chin, and sweat rolled over the scars on his cheeks and forehead as he stood on the field at Bill Armstrong Stadium. Some of his teammates stood motionless, while others sat on the wet turf after the game.

Field hockey returns after 18 years

One of the buzzes in the athletic department this weekend doesn't involve the basketball or football teams. Nearly two decades after IU fielded its last varsity field hockey team, the sport makes its anticipated return 1 p.m. Saturday against Slippery Rock in Mellencamp Pavilion.

Rugby team starts season against Purdue

Scores of new club rugby players, some with experience and some without, hope to start their season with a victory against rival Purdue. The Mudsharks begin the season against Purdue at 1 p.m., Sept. 9 in West Lafayette, Ind.

No Dayne, no problem for Badgers

National championship and Wisconsin are two words rarely used in the same sentence. Wisconsin has never won a national title, and from 1963 until Barry Alvarez took over as head coach in 1990, the Badgers were one of the Big Ten's pushovers.
