Hoosiers ready to take on Falcons

IU will try to recover after a tough series against regional and league opponent Miami (Ohio) last weekend. The Hoosiers lost a 2-6 contest in Oxford, Ohio, and came back to Bloomington for a tie Saturday. IU will take on regional opponent Bowling Green State University Friday for a one-game-only matchup that has national playoff implications.

Jump shot legend a Hoosier

One of the most basic functions in the game of basketball is the jump shot. Without this weapon, the game would still be grounded in its original roots of underhanded shots, which date back to the sport's beginnings in 1891 with Dr. James Naismith.

Rivalry gets another chapter

Saturday, Dec. 7, the women's basketball team knocked the Georgetown Hoyas down from an undefeated 5-0. Four days later, they put a stop to the 15 game home winning streak of the women's team at North Texas. It only seems right that their next victory should come against Purdue.

IU, Purdue set for 'Duel in the Dome'

An IU-Purdue basketball game has always meant a battle for bragging rights. The level of play has always been intense and, on occasion, a player or two has lost his cool. Whether the game is at Assembly Hall or Mackey Arena, the fans are always rabid and the stadium is always packed.

Miami teammates among five for Heisman

New York -- Top-ranked Miami players Ken Dorsey and Willis McGahee are Heisman Trophy finalists. This is the first time since 1994 that teammates were among the top five in the voting. Iowa quarterback Brad Banks, Penn State running back Larry Johnson and Southern California quarterback Carson Palmer also were invited Wednesday for the award's presentation.

Junior class standouts lead the way for No. 13 IU

Toughest portion of schedule still remains

After finals wrap up next week, most IU students will be heading home to their families for a few weeks to relax and take a break from all the hustle and bustle of school. But for the men's swimming and diving team, they will have about a week break and then will return to school on Dec. 28 to begin training for the toughest part of the season.

2002 season 'just the beginning'

Coming off of a dismal 8-20 last season and a ninth place finish in the Big Ten, the Hoosier volleyball squad had a lot of rebuilding to do. Yet 20 wins, three All-Big Ten team members and a NCAA Tournament bid later, the IU reconstruction came through with flying colors.

Season not a total loss for IU

Women snap Green streak

The IU women's basketball team continued their cross-country game play Wednesday night when they played North Texas (4-3) at the Super Pit in Denton, Texas. They ended the 15 game home winning streak for North Texas by defeating them 51-43.

Grossman still undecided about future plans

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Florida quarterback Rex Grossman is still deciding whether to leave college for the NFL or stay with the Gators for his senior season. "I actually haven't made up my mind yet," he said Tuesday. Grossman, a junior who was Indiana's 1998 high school Mr. Football at Bloomington South, also said he probably won't submit his name to the NFL Draft Advisory Board, which informs players where they will likely be drafted. Grossman said he has information from last year that he can rely on.

Future ticket fiascoes can be prevented

Defending National Champion Michigan State came into the Hall sporting a 23 game winning streak that seemed poised to continue with only seconds remaining to play. And then, just before the horn sounded, Kirk Haston drove a three-point dagger into the Spartans' hearts and sent the place into delirium.

Needing win, women ready for Texas game

The IU women's basketball team hits the road again and continues its long-traveled pre-conference season tonight. The Hoosiers duel with North Texas in Denton, Texas at 8 p.m. tonight. The Lady Eagles, who have the fourth longest home winning streak in the nation, finished first in the Sun Belt conference last year and compiled an overall record of 21-9 before losing in the first round of the WNIT. Coach Kathi Bennett, who is in her third year at IU, is eager for the challenge against North Texas, who have won 15 consecutive home games.

Hoosiers conquer Commodores behind Wright's 31

IU men's basketball coach Mike Davis described Bracey Wright's double digit scoring as "quiet" in last Saturday's win over University of Illinois-Chicago. The freshman guard managed to score 16 points with little fanfare as teammate Jeff Newton grabbed his third double-double.

Two hours before No. 7 IU faced Vanderbilt Monday night, freshman guard Bracey Wright went onto the Assembly Hall court by himself for an early shoot-around. He shot some threes, practiced his free throws and went into pre-game warm-ups with some extra confidence.

Team impress at different meets

The split squad women's swim team -- half competing at the US Open in Minneapolis and half at the Miami (OH) Invitational -- had impressive showings at both meets over the weekend. IU tied for second place with Big Ten rival Minnesota in the Female University category at the US Open, while the rest of the team placed third at the Miami (OH) Invitational. In Minneapolis, the Hoosier swimmers earned four national cut times and recorded ten season best times.

Split squad finishes 8th, 9th

The IU men's swimming and diving team faced stiff competition this weekend at the Texas Invitational in Austin, Tex. and the Miami Invitational in Oxford, Ohio. The top eleven swimmers competed in Texas against many ranked teams where they tied for ninth with Texas Christian University with 93 points. The Texas Aggies won the meet with 721 points. The remainder of the Hoosier squad and the diving team competed in Miami, and finished eighth in a field of thirteen with 489 points. Kenyon College won the meet with a score of 2,209.5 points.
