Yankees take care of Blue Jays for Loaiza's 100th win

NEW YORK -- Jason Giambi homered to end the longest slump of his career, and Esteban Loaiza finally earned his 100th career victory and first for the Yankees, leading New York over the Toronto Blue Jays 5-3 Tuesday night. Gary Sheffield hit his 36th home run two days after getting a pair of cortisone shots. Alex Rodriguez almost homered for the Yankees, too, but was robbed on a spectacular catch by center fielder Vernon Wells.

Sigma Pi aims for 5th straight intramural championship

Brotherhoods are based on a will and desire to put forth the greatest effort in protecting and aiding their cohorts in any circumstance. The bond that fraternities possess includes this brotherhood; it helps unite each fraternity brother together in creating a cohesive group of guys that would go to great lengths to protect the reputation and well-being of each individual.

For the past two years, billiards has been conspicuously missing from the long list of intramural sports offered by the IU RecSports program, but this fall marks its return. The program initially left campus due to lack of participation, but because students missed the program, it is back by popular demand.

Daily grind leaves senior's plate full

After hammering the snooze button with a full fist, the typical IU student tries desperately just to get those ever-so-important five extra minutes of sleep. Getting on and successfully riding the bus is even more of a challenge, filled with constant head-nods and dozing-off. And the further into the semester, that morning shower becomes scarier and the Starbucks cups or a want for a direct IV line of coffee becomes more prevalent. And we haven't even talked about class and the struggle to pencil in a nap somewhere.

IU hopes to bounce back against Boilers

The brooms were out this past weekend at the T.I.S. Bookstore Invitational, held at IU's University Gym. Unfortunately for the Hoosiers, the visiting teams were the ones cleaning up, sweeping IU three matches to none. Despite losses to Kent State University, the University of Pittsburgh and the University of Alabama, there were bright spots and even an IU milestone that has the team confident and ready to move on. In the loss to Kent State, senior Christina Archibald's 26 kills helped her set a new all-time kills record at IU. Archibald has now recorded 1,547 kills, breaking the previous record set by Melissa Brewer in 2003.

Cubs, Marlins split crucial doubleheader

MIAMI -- The Chicago Cubs' 24-hour visit to Miami included a brief stay atop the NL wild-card race. Then they lost their lead because they couldn't beat David Weathers. The journeyman right-hander, making his first start in six years, limited Chicago to two hits and one run in five innings, and the Florida Marlins won 5-2 for a split of their doubleheader Monday.

Injury bug strikes with vengeance in Week 2

The rookie season of Cleveland Browns tight end Kellen Winslow Jr. might have ended after just two games. The first-round draft pick is among several players who will be sidelined for a few weeks, or more, as a result of injuries in Sunday's games. Others include New Orleans Saints running back Deuce McAllister and Baltimore Ravens tight end Todd Heap, both of whom were knocked out of games with a sprained ankle.

The Oct. 2 IU-Michigan football game at Memorial Stadium has been set to kick off at 2:30 p.m. on ABC. The game will be shown regionally. Saturday, IU plays Michigan State at home in a game which will be broadcast on ESPN Plus Local but will not be shown live. It will be shown in tape delay starting at 8 p.m. on WTTV Channel 4. The game will be shown live on ESPN GamePlan.

Hoosier headman receives acclaim

For the seventh straight year, the IU men's and women's diving coach Jeff Huber has received the U.S. Diving's National Coach of the Year award. "Winning this award never gets old," Huber said in a statement.

Wildcats claw Hoosiers 51-32

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Defense was the hot topic after the Hoosiers' upset victory over the University of Oregon last weekend. It will be issue No. 1 this week for IU after the University of Kentucky ran and threw all over the Hoosier defense in its 51-32 victory. The win continued Kentucky's dominance in the series in recent years -- winning nine of the last 10 and three in a row and snapping IU's two-game winning streak in the process.

IU takes 3rd-straight Intercollegiate title IU took home its third straight Indiana Intercollegiates title Friday evening at Purdue University. The championship has become an IU staple in recent years. The Hoosiers took five of the top seven places in dominating the 8,000-meter course. Indiana State University was the closest competition, finishing 29 points behind IU's winning 20 point tally.

Colts knock off Titans in AFC South battle; Bears surprise Packers

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Peyton Manning threw for 254 yards and two touchdowns to win the first game between the NFL's defending co-MVP quarterbacks, leading Indianapolis to a 31-17 victory Sunday over Tennessee. Steve McNair was 25-of-39 for 273 yards and ran for a touchdown, but was intercepted in the end zone, sacked three times and had his final drive ended when he was sacked and fumbled in the last minute.

IU opens Big Ten season with two home wins

IU women's soccer coach Mick Lyon said last week his team had to have two wins this weekend and excuses wouldn't be tolerated. It wasn't pretty, but his Hoosier team did just that. IU kicked off its 2004 Big Ten season with a 2-1 victory over Minnesota Friday and a 1-0 win against Iowa Sunday at Bill Armstrong Stadium.

Hoosiers struggle in weekend tourney

Coming off an exciting five-set win against IP-Fort Wayne Tuesday, the IU women's volleyball team hosted the TIS Bookstore Invitational this weekend. The Hoosiers were unable to get on track all weekend, losing all three matches they played. IU coach Katie Weismiller was quick to point out what went wrong for the Hoosiers this weekend.

Goal with 13 seconds left clinches winless weekend

The University of New Mexico scored a goal with 13 seconds left to defeat IU 1-0 in double overtime to cap off a winless weekend for the No. 1 Hoosiers. This was the second time IU has fallen in double overtime on Sept. 18. Last season the Hoosiers took the field Sept. 18 in South Bend and fought their way into two overtimes before finally giving up a goal and losing the game to Notre Dame.

Hoosier LET DOWN

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Last week, the IU football team forced seven turnovers from a ranked opponent at a stadium that hadn't seen a non-conference visitor win in a decade. Saturday, that same Hoosier defense was unable to capitalize on the opponents' miscues or keep them out of the end zone.

Europe defeats U.S. in Ryder Cup

BLOOMFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- The Ryder Cup won, Sergio Garcia and Lee Westwood raced to their boisterous fans and unfurled the European Union flag, the new symbol of dominance in these matches. They came to Oakland Hills as underdogs. They celebrated as underdogs. By now, everyone should know better. Europe again proved to be the best in the Ryder Cup with its greatest performance Sunday, handing the Americans their worst loss in the 77-year history of the matches.

Hoosiers kick off Big Ten season tonight

Some college athletes and coaches claim that a new season begins when the conference season starts. Whether this is true or not, the IU women's soccer team begins the 2004 Big Ten season this weekend.
