Two late goals boost IU to victory

IU's men's soccer team was as unlucky as possible Wednesday against IU-Purdue University at Indianapolis. The Hoosiers outshot the Jaguars 25-3 but still only managed two goals in a 2-0 victory. Both goals came in the final six minutes of play, with sophomore midfielder Pat Noonan finally giving the Hoosiers a 1-0 lead with 5:38 remaining. Junior midfielder Ryan Mack got IU an insurance goal just 59 seconds later, tapping in a rebound from just one yard away.

Hoosiers to face potent Wildcats

To put it in nice terms, the IU defense struggled in the Hoosiers' season-opening 41-38 loss to North Carolina State Saturday at Memorial Stadium. Things won't get much easier for the Hoosiers this Saturday night when they travel to Kentucky to take on the Wildcats and their "Air Raid" offense. Last weekend, IU saw Wolfpack freshman quarterback Philip Rivers throw for 401 yards and five touchdowns as he rallied his team back from deficits of 18 and 15 points. This week, Wildcat redshirt-freshman quarterback Jared Lorenzen will have his crack at the Hoosiers.

Coach reflects on 1987 championship game

Indiana was down 73-72 with under 15 seconds to play. Smart passed to Thomas in the post. Thomas kicked it back out to Smart. From the baseline, Smart, to win the game … In the 1987 NCAA title game, senior guard Keith Smart's 15-foot jumper from the left corner with six seconds remaining in the game won the national championship, 74-73 against Syracuse.

Knight rebuts 'zero-tolerance' claims

Bob Knight sat on his back porch Wednesday morning with his attorney to his left and one of his best friends to his right. His wife Karen was inside their home. These are now the people he surrounds himself with ' family, friends and attorneys. These are the relationships the former coach has sustained. After about three days of "I-said-he-said" debates, a man who is arguably one of the country's greatest basketball coaches, was fired. But the tension began long ago.

Fife, Moye to stay

Junior guard Dane Fife spent Monday night at a Bloomington comedy club. While he was sitting in the audience, the onstage comedian pleaded for Fife to stay at IU. The students in attendance then started cheering for Fife, who announced early in the day he was transferring from IU because of Bob Knight's removal as basketball coach.

Bob Knight said that if he had taken a year to go out and find a place ideal for himself, he could not find a better place than Bloomington. He's uncovered the best hunting and fishing spots in the area. He also said the best crowds in the country are found in Assembly Hall. And certainly, the city is home to a few of his closest friends.

Davis named interim coach

At 4:10 p.m. Tuesday, the turmoil surrounding the IU basketball team ended when Mike Davis was named interim head coach by athletics director Clarence Doninger. John Treloar was named interim associate head coach.

Football coach Cam Cameron was fined $10,000 by the Big Ten office Tuesday for remarks directed at officials after Saturday's loss to North Carolina State. The fine will be taken from IU's share of network TV money. Cameron apologized to both the media and IU fans Tuesday at his weekly news conference.

Indiana hires interim coach Davis

BLOOMINGTON — Indiana headed off a possible player revolt over Bob Knight's dismissal by hiring assistant Mike Davis as interim basketball coach, a source told The Associated Press. Davis was expected to be introduced as the new coach Tuesday at a news conference, said the high-ranking University source, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
