Spring practice begins today

Randle El expected to play wide receiver

After a disappointing 3-8 season in 2000, the football team looks to begin a rebound today when it starts spring practice at 3:30 p.m. \nThe Hoosiers will practice 15 times in sessions open to the public. Anyone wishing to attend a practice should contact the IU football office. The Hoosiers' spring season will conclude with the annual Red-White scrimmage at noon April 14 at Memorial Stadium. \nCoach Cam Cameron returns 16 starters from last year's squad, which claimed victories against Cincinnati, Iowa and Minnesota.\nThe most notable difference with this year's squad will be the position switch of senior Antwaan Randle El, who is expected to see action at wide receiver during spring drills, but will likely play both positions this fall. Junior quarterback Tommy Jones enters spring camp as the Hoosiers' No. 1 quarterback. All five offensive linemen who started last season return to protect the quarterback.\nIU lost six of its last seven games last year, including a season-ending defeat at Purdue that landed the Boilermakers a berth in the Rose Bowl. Four of IU's eight losses came in the final minute of regulation, including a season-opening stumble against the Atlantic Coast Conference's North Carolina State. IU again opens the season against the Wolfpack, but travels to Raleigh this time for the Sept. 8 match-up.\nThe remaining non-conference games -- Kentucky and Utah -- are at home. The Hoosiers will travel to Wisconsin, Iowa, Michigan State and Penn State for road Big Ten contests. The home portion of the Big Ten schedule consists of Ohio State, Illinois, Northwestern and Purdue.
