2 team members honored as All-Americans

For first time in 5 years, teammates on Hoosier wrestling squad receive coveted title during same year

For the first time in five years, IU has produced two All-American wrestlers in the same season. Senior Kevin Stanley and junior Viktor Sveda were the recipients of the honor, having finished sixth and third, respectively, at the 2001 NCAA Wrestling Championship March 15-17 in Iowa City, Iowa.\nThis marks the second time Sveda has been named an All-American, the first coming two years ago. The 184-pounder defeated seventh-seeded Andy Hrovat of Michigan, 7-2 in the consolation bracket finals to seal the third-place finish. Despite the fact that Sveda's third place was the best finish by a Hoosier since Roger Chandler finished second in 1997, Sveda was disappointed with the results.\n"He is disappointed that he didn't win it all even though his only loss came to the undefeated (Cael) Sanderson (Iowa State)," coach Duane Goldman said. "That just shows his competitive nature. His goal wasn't just to place; it was to win a championship, and that is why he is disappointed. He was highly respected in this tournament. The crowd really liked him, because he has such a competitive attitude."\nThe All-American honor was a bit more gratifying for Stanley, as the 165-pound senior became the first four-time NCAA Championship qualifier in the history of IU wrestling. Stanley concluded his college career with a 111-39 overall mark, and is ranked fifth at IU with 25 career pins.\n"He had a great tournament. He came in as the No. 9 seed and came away with a sixth-place finish," Goldman said. "A lot can be said about his performance this week." \nSophomore Ty Matthews, freshman Coyte Cooper and sophomore Greg Schaefer also wrestled in the tournament, but all three were eliminated by the end of the second session.
