Fans' lawsuit to continue

Special judge Cecile Blau ruled Monday to allow 46 plaintiffs to pursue their claim that the IU board of trustees broke the Indiana Open Door Law in firing former men's basketball coach Bobby Knight last September. While Blau ruled Myles Brand was within both the scope of the law and his legal authority as university president in firing Knight, she did acknowledge the plaintiffs' claim that the board met in executive session without public notice. Blau rejected both parties' requests for summary judgment and will allow the suit to commence. In a ruling received by the Monroe County Court Monday, Blau agreed Brand had sole authority to fire Knight, a power designated by the trustees. Blau wrote that the president "had the authority to make, enforce and terminate contracts," thus enabling him to legally fire Knight.

Hot Hoosiers head to Atlanta

IU beat the Kent State Golden Flashes 81-69 Saturday to advance to the Final Four in Atlanta, Georgia. The Hoosiers hit their first 8 three pointers and finished with 15. Senior Dane Fife led the team, scoring a team-high 17 points, shooting 5 of 6 from beyond the arc. The Hoosiers will face the Oklahoma Sooners Saturday. Game time will be announced on Monday.

Nationally ranked team loses to Michigan opponents

The women's soccer team went into the weekend nationally ranked for the first time in more than two seasons. After this weekend, the Hoosiers are sure to relegate their No. 23 ranking after losses to the Michigan Wolverines and Michigan State Spartans.

Junior football player arrested

An IU football player has been charged with raping a 21-year old female he met at a Bloomington sports bar early Sunday. A plea of not guilty was entered for Clarence Young, 20, at his initial hearing Tuesday. Young faces a charge of class B felony rape, punishable by up to 20 years in jail. According to a jail spokesman, Young was released Monday evening for $500 cash bail on a $20,000 assurity bond. Young's initial hearing has been set for August, said Monroe County Prosecutor Carl Salzmann. The victim was at a bar with friends when she met Young, but she doesn't remember how she ended up at Young's apartment complex, according to police reports. "She remembers being dragged up the sidewalk at Jackson Heights," Salzmann said.

Crushing the Cardinals

Junior forward Jeff Newton only had four points Saturday against Ball State. He also had seven rebounds. More importantly, Newton helped the Hoosiers take control of the frontcourt in their 74-61 win at Assembly Hall. With 9:32 left in the first half, Newton blocked the shot of Ball State junior forward Theron Smith. On the Cardinals' next possession, senior guard Patrick Jackson was about to go for a layup on a fast break before he saw Newton fill the lane. Watching Newton the whole way, Jackson had to settle for a 15-foot jump shot that he missed. The sequence set the tone for the rest of the game, with the Cardinals having to rely on jump shooting to keep them close. The Hoosiers (6-2) finished with 40 points in the paint. Ball State (5-2) had just 12. Along with sophomore forward Jared Jeffries and sophomore center George Leach, Newton and IU dominated the lane on both sides of the floor.

Hoosiers loose, ready for Utah

SACRAMENTO - Sophomore Jared Jeffries joked with freshman Donald Perry, telling him to dive into press row for a loose ball. Senior Dane Fife wildly applauded every made free throw. IU coach Mike Davis' youngest son, Antoine, entertained girls sitting near the court. And Jeffries capped off the 50-minute workout Wednesday night with an alley-oop off the backboard to Jeff Newton for a reverse dunk. Their recent struggles in the post season still fresh in their minds, the fifth-seeded Hoosiers are not about to be intimidated at the thought of another early exit from the NCAA Tournament. Tonight, at a little after 10 p.m. Bloomington time, IU takes on 12th-seeded Utah in an opening round game in the South bracket at Arco Arena in Sacramento.

Hoosier captains encourage team

Team captains are key to the success of any athletic team. The Hoosier field hockey team is no exception. "As a group, regardless of the condition we are put in (the team captains) have a positive attitude and help bring up the rest of the team even if we are frustrated," freshman forward Ryan Woolsey said. The field hockey captains were selected by their teammates at the beginning of the season. Senior back Akila Jones, senior forward Brooke Magers and junior midfielder Erica Nilsson were selected by their peers to lead the team.

Hoosiers let another close game slip away

INDIANAPOLIS- Senior Dane Fife sat with a stoic look on his face, looking straight ahead from the seat in front of his locker, and still in his uniform 30 minutes after the game against Iowa ended. Junior Kyle Hornsby was two lockers to Fife's right and in the same position.

California trip unsuccessful for IU

The women's volleyball team returned home from California Sunday with one win and two losses to add to their record, now 2-4, after playing three matches in the Loyola Marymount Volleyball Classic Friday and Saturday. The Hoosier's beginning match Friday evening against host Loyola Marymount was a strong start for IU, who won the first game of the match against the Lions.

Divers place at nationals

Divers Erin Quinn, a senior, and Sara Reiling, a junior, continued a spectacular week for the Hoosier diving program by finishing fourth and sixth, respectively, at the U.S. Nationals Sunday. Both earned spots on the national team as a result.

Team sponsors invitational for 3 opponents

After a tie and two overtime losses to Michigan earlier this season, revenge is on the mind of the water polo team as it plays host to a four-team field at the Indiana Invitational at Councilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center this weekend. Michigan State is first on IU's agenda at 1 p.m Saturday, followed by a date with No. 18 Massachusetts at 7:30 p.m. In the final match of the invitational, the No. 17 Hoosiers (13-7-1) take on No. 13 Michigan (14-9-1) at 1 p.m. Sunday.

Track conditions play role in quals

Timing is everything during qualifications for Little 500, and it has nothing to do with a stop watch. The time that each rider is vying for is more than a race time. The time of day that each team competes is important because it could have an influence upon their speed and track times.

Football team's 2nd scrimmage leaves room for improvement

Much like the hot and cold weather plaguing central Indiana, the Hoosier football team had highs and lows during their second scrimmage of the spring season. "It went good and OK," senior wide receiver Antwaan Randle El said. "We didn't play as well as we wanted on offense, and we still have some things that need to be corrected on defense, but overall we stayed with it and near the end made some big plays."

WASHINGTON -- The Washington Wizards signed first-round draft pick Jared Jeffries on Wednesday. The 6-foot-11, 215-pound Jeffries was the 11th overall pick in last month's draft.

Junior wants to win it all again

Hoosiers not on TV

After seasons of constant television coverage, the men's basketball team will take a hit this season. And we have the economy to thank, IU Media Relations Director Jeff Fanter said. Seven of IU's first 12 games - including two exhibition contests - will not be televised. Sunday's exhibition victory against Athletes in Action was the first. Other games that will not be televised include Nike Elite, Charlotte, Southern Illinois, Ball State and both Hoosier Classic contests. IU's game against Miami of Florida will be broadcast regionally on the Sunshine Network.

Hoosiers optimistic for new season

Interpreted word for word, the women's soccer team's goal for the 2001 season may not seem profound. But coach Joe Kelley maintains that if his team plays its hardest, the Hoosiers can expect an improvement on last year's 8-9-1 record. "It may sound so trite, but we just want to play really well. Every game we want to compete," Kelley said. "We want to go out and play with pride and outwork the other team. Beyond that obviously we're judged by wins and losses. It would be great if things fell our way, but we've got to make our breaks."
