After three bouts with Melanoma, tennis star returns to the courts

For NCAA athletes, finding the time to fit anything in their schedules other than classes and practices can be the ultimate challenge. But for senior Karie Schlukebir, tennis has been her escape as she faces an opponent with much more than a serve-and-volley attack. The Kalamazoo, Mich., native first picked up a racquet when her mother, a tennis instructor, introduced her to the game. As a multisport athlete in high school, it was tennis that sent her to IU. But when she signed as a member of the Cream and Crimson, she had no idea tennis would act as her support group through her most difficult of times.

Hoosiers travel to Penn State looking for a win

Following Saturday's double-overtime loss to Iowa, senior A.J. Moye had a talk with his teammates. He said he spoke with emotion and from the heart to let his teammates know how he felt with this being his last year. IU (11-9, 5-4 Big Ten) will take the floor at 6 p.m. tonight at Penn State to see if that message has finally sunk in. "Everybody knows what it takes now, there's no doubt in my mind," Moye said. "We're going to give everything we've got to win. We saw what happens when we take stuff for granted out there on that floor." Emotions got the best of several players last week after the Hoosiers dropped three straight games, two of those at home. Moye and sophomore forward Sean Kline both talked about the lack of team effort, without naming names.

Professors despise spending

Majerus: 'I won't come back this year'

Tough practices act as inspiration

Downstairs in Assembly Hall where the IU wrestling team practices, quotes fill the red and white walls. Meant for inspiration and motivation, one of them reads, "Unless You Have Prepared Yourself and Deserve to Emerge Victorious, Do Not Expect to Win or Be Disappointed When You Lose." Another quote on the wall spells out, "Work Develops Champions." They are especially relevant to this team, which battles through physically grinding practices and voluntary workouts to maintain their weight and endurance.

Taking the plunge: Divers donate proceeds to charity

Jefferson hits 4-minute mile at Indiana Invitational

Perhaps track and field's most hallowed barrier -- the four-minute mile -- is something every runner dreams of eclipsing. Each year, IU distance coach Robert Chapman sets up an elite heat of the mile, with runners included specifically to set a hot pace and a gathering of IU and neighboring distance talent. The race is consistently one of the top events of the meet.

Hoosiers unhappy with second half

Eight seconds were left on the clock, and Illinois had whittled IU's lead down to one. Sophomore Cyndi Valentin played damage control and drilled a jumper to put the score at 28-25 to give IU some breathing room, but Illinois junior Tiffanie Guthrie had a different idea as she heaved a 35-foot shot and drilled it to knot the game at 28.

IU wins 3, loses 1 in San Diego

The Hoosiers traveled to San Diego beginning with play on Saturday against No. 15 UC-Irvine, in a match that featured another come-from behind victory by IU coach Barry King's squad. UCI jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first half but IU matched them at three a piece right before the break. In the second half, the match seesawed back and forth until the final minute of play when freshman Kristin Zernicke netted the game winning goal off an assist from fellow freshman Janis Pardy. Saturday afternoon the Hoosiers battled No. 4 Long Beach State. IU stayed in the match throughout most of the first half and third period, and was down only two goals with one period left to play. Unfortunately, LBSU came out with more intensity in the last period of play, scoring three times while holding IU scoreless for a final of 9-4.

Home football attendance ranks low

Heart-breaker in double overtime

Even a miracle tip-in to send it to overtime and a long three-pointer to send it to double-overtime couldn't save the Hoosiers Saturday as they fell 84-82 to the Iowa Hawkeyes. Iowa sophomore guard Jeff Horner scored on a lay-up with 1.6 seconds left in the second extra period. The loss is the third straight for IU (11-9, 5-4 Big Ten), its second in a row at home. "It was just a back and forth game, and it came down to who wanted it more, and I think they just outplayed us," IU sophomore guard Marshall Strickland said. "Iowa wanted it more today. It was back and forth, and we had opportunity after opportunity to put them away, we just couldn't do it. They out-fought us today." The Hoosiers managed just two points in the second overtime, but the game was still within its reach. IU came up with a stop on a missed shot by Iowa senior guard Brody Boyd. But Horner pulled down the offensive rebound with 17 seconds left, pulled it out and then drove for the winning points for Iowa (12-8, 5-4).

Surprising Biffle wins Daytona pole DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Greg Biffle is full of surprises at Daytona. After winning the Pepsi 400 here in July -- the only rookie in NASCAR's top stock car series to win a race in 2003 -- the former Busch Series and Craftsman Truck Series champion grabbed the pole Sunday for the Daytona 500.

Week off helps Hoosiers in pair of wins
