Powers highlights Missouri meet\nThe men's track team turned in a number of solid performances Friday night at the Tiger Classic in Columbia, Mo. \nThe men's highlight came in the form of junior All-American Chris Powers, whose 8:13.46 season debut in the 3,000-meters garnered him a victory and a Hearnes Fieldhouse record. Sophomore Stephen Haas finished third by one-tenth of a second in 8:23.34. \nIn the mile, junior Charlie Koeppen finished sixth in 4:22. \nSenior Rodney Hollis also provided some fireworks, winning the 800-meter in 1:51.72. The Hoosiers went 1-3-4 in the 400-meter, with freshman sprinter David Neville winning in 48.81, followed by seniors Ryan Sarbinoff in 49.78 and Daniel Martin in 50.03.\nSophomore Andre Grimes finished third in the 60-meter dash in 6.94 and second in the 200-meter 22.42, as did freshman Kiwan Lawson in the long jump with a 7.00 meter jump.\nThe IU throwing corps offered two second places among collegians, with sophomore Ryan Ketchum's personal best of 17.18 in the shot put and sophomore Wil Fleming's 17.46 in the weight throw. \nIn the 60-meter hurdles, freshman Stephanos Iaonnou ran fourth in 8.12, while IU's 4x400 relay finished second in 3:19. \nThe Hoosiers return home for the Indiana Invitational this weekend at the Harry Gladstein Fieldhouse.

IU wrestlers fall short against Illini \nThe wrestling team of No. 2 Illinois came to Bloomington Saturday with a perfect record and left the same way, as the Hoosiers lost a close battle, 24-13, to the Fighting Illini. The lost moved IU to 17-5 overall on the year and 1-2 in Big Ten play. Illinois continued their perfect season at 9-0 overall and 3-0 in conference action.\nThe Hoosiers were behind the eight ball at the onset, as sophomore Matt Cooper lost to the top-ranked wrestler in the nation at 157 pounds, Alex Tirapelle. Junior Pat DeGain won IU's first match and was matched by freshman Joe Buuck's pin of No. 9 Mike Behnke. Buuck is now 11-0 since moving to heavyweight. Sophomore Joe Dubuque lost a heart-breaking 8-6 decision in sudden death to No. 3 Kyle Ott, and No. 12 Brady Richardson was narrowly defeated 6-4 by No. 8 Pete Friedl. Senior Coyte Cooper closed the night with an impressive 14-6 major decision victory over Michael Martin, moving his record to 30-1 on the year and a perfect 3-0 in the Big Ten.\nIU tries to pick up the pieces next Saturday in continuing Big Ten conference action. The Hoosiers will host No. 7 Minnesota. Matches will commence at 7 p.m. at University Gym.

Two athletes set Missouri Fieldhouse records Friday\nTwo IU athletes set Hearnes Fieldhouse records Friday at the Tiger Classic at the University of Missouri. One of those athletes, junior Ara Towns, posted IU's first NCAA provisional qualifying mark in the 60-meter dash to compete at the NCAA Indoor Championship in March.\nTowns sprinted to a first place finish in the 60-meters with a time of 7.43 seconds, edging teammate, junior Karla Marshall, who finished second with a time of 7.65 seconds. Towns also took second place in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.56 seconds.\nFreshman Courtney Johnson set a new personal record and a Hearnes Fieldhouse record after finishing first in the 60-meter hurdles in 8.53 seconds. Two other IU freshmen competed in the 60-meter hurdles. Lorian Price and Darcelle McCutcheon finished fifth and six, respectively, with times of 8.96 and 8.99 seconds.\nIn the 200-meters, IU took the top three finishing places, as junior Charlene Maddox won in 25.02 seconds, Towns in second place and Marshall in third with a time of 25.60 seconds. Maddox also took first place in the 400-meter run with a time of 57.57 seconds.\nThe distance portion of the team had a strong performance, as senior Audrey Giesler had the best collegiate finish in the 3000-meter run with a time of 9:52.87 seconds. Another senior, Lauren Chesnut, finished second in the triple-jump with a jump of 12.12-meters.\nIU is back in action Friday and Saturday when they host the Indiana Invitational at the Gladstein Fieldhouse.

Women's tennis splits in Arizona\nThe IU women's tennis team took to the road this weekend in two matches against the University of the Pacific and No. 19 Arizona State, winning one and dropping their only match to date.\nOn Saturday, IU defeated underdog Pacific 6-1. IU coach Lin Loring said he was unsure of what to expect from his team playing their first match outdoors but was pleased with their success.\nIU began the match by winning all three doubles matches. The No. 24 doubles tandom of Karie Schlukebir and Linda Tran won 8-1, with Sarah Batty, Laura McGaffigan, Dora Vastag and Cecile Perton winning the other two doubles matches.\nIn singles play, the Hoosiers took five of six matches, with only Tran falling in three sets.\n"(Saturday) was a tough match because of it being played outdoors," Loring said in a statement. "I think it was a lot closer than it would have been if we had played on our own courts."\nOn Sunday, IU looked to stretch their win streak to five. But the Hoosiers ran up against a talented Arizona State team dead-set on defending their home courts.\nIU was swept on doubles, going one point behind before winning only two of six singles matches. \nTop singles player Vastag defeated No. 50 ranked Joslynn Burkett, 6-4, 6-4, while Batty won 6-2, 6-2.\nThe Hoosiers must regroup in practice this week before their next action. \nInvading Bloomington next weekend is No. 9 Duke, the third of IU's 15 ranked opponents this season.
